(5,455 posts)chicken noodle soup. I stock up every winter because we get lots of snow up here in western NY. 😊

(60,612 posts)Lake Ontario is a short distance and lake effect can create havoc!!
Were expecting snow to begin at about 2pm per the weather report.
I like Campbells low sodium soup and have often used the Wegmans brand, too.
Stay warm and cozy.
😊👍

(60,612 posts)husband was in Florida for a business trip, I drove right past a crowed food store. I decided not to stop as they were calling for 1-2 inches of snow. What I didn;t know was they changed it to 6=8 inches while I was in school Got across bridge and there was a squall. Made it home. Somehow a Northwesterly and a Southernly stalled over Pittsburgh and couldn't move further north. We got 26 inches of snow and was off of school as an Arctic Freeze followed it. The snow in the Blizzard was blowing sideways and coming down sideways. Husband was stuck in Florida and it made the National news. Only the upper part of PA get the lake effect.
What an ordeal. Lake Erie is huge. Part of the Erie Canal is not far from us either. When Buffalo gets hit they really get hit! The good thing is that because it happens often the roads are usually cleared quickly and often. Its snowing now but not sure how many inches will fall. Gonna have soup for diner!!👍😊

(113,971 posts)Yeah, me too.
Although when Chunky Soups first came out a couple of decades ago, they had a chunky chicken noodle soup with mushrooms. I loved that--since discontinued, (of course).

(14,272 posts)I don't like processed cheese slices, though, and prefer cheddar. I also shun canned soups because there is so much crap in them and they are, well...canned! Yuk. Tomato soup is easy to make and when I have some in the fridge I will be grilling some cheese sandwiches to go with it.
Another comfort dish for crappy weather is a rich chili served with rice and hearty cornbread. I always save my last half piece of cornbread to slather jam on. It finishes the whole comfort thing.
We had red lentil curry last night with chutney and fresh grilled naan flatbread. Yum!
Also, cookies! Fresh baked, warm cookies are winter wonders.
May you stay warm and pleasantly full.

We're having a low key weekend since yesterday was a very shitty day....we had to say goodbye to our wonderful 16+ year old beagle, Dexter.

A not-very-healthy comfort food, but you were asking about unhealthy foods that time:

I'd stopped buying those fudge-dipped coconut grandola bars for months because I knew I was kidding myself with my excuse that they were a healthier alternative to the Mounds and Almond Joy candy bars I love. Got some yesterday while stocking up on groceries because I didn't like the weather forecast (another excuse to buy them, as if the hundred dollars' worth of other, healthy groceries - lots of fresh produce and meat and fish and dairy - wouldn't have tided me over till the next trip to the store). Sigh...
Right now I'm wishing I'd thought to get soup, though. And Marie Callender chicken pot pie.

(1,230 posts)*Husbands homemade chili with saltines or tortilla chips or cornbread
*Chicken noodle soup or chicken pot pie or grilled cheese, no tomato soup, thank you. How about a slice of my homemade Carrot cake for dessert and again for breakfast the next day? Lemon buttercream frosting.
As was our wedding cake.
*Husbands Salisbury Steak with mashed potatoes and gravy
*Lasagna or Mamas Spaghetti with a green salad and garlic bread. Brownies for dessert.
*And at least once a year, my dads recipe for Welsh rarebit on toast, pumpernickel is my favorite or the small party rye bread sometimes found in the deli department or bakery or not at all. With a veggie platter and assorted pickles and olives.
Oh, yum!
Bon appètit, yall!

(60,612 posts)that for ages. Thank you for posting all those dishes. It gives me some ideas.

(9,056 posts)that was my Mom's ham and bean soup that was so thick you could stand a spoon in it. She would make a bunch of it in early November and freeze it in quart freezer containers. Then whenever the mood hit you could go to the freezer. She did beef stew, vegetable beef soup and chile that way also. Along with mashed strawberries, vegetables of all kinds etc. Middle of winter a few spoonfuls of those mashed strawberries over vanilla ice cream really hit the spot.
One of my favorite dinners would be when I walked in the house and she was making beef short ribs and gravy, boiled potatoes and we'd have a pie for dessert that she made earlier. I remember how good a little catsup was with those short ribs and mixed with the gravy and potatoes. My paternal grandmother lived just up the road and she made the best pork steak and gravy and mashed potatoes. Big black cast iron pans. Slow cooking.

Their snow started about 10:30am and is still pretty strong.
It rarely gets like this here in North Alabama. I guess a couple grilled cheese would be adequate for me.

(41,634 posts)It's snowing fast and hard in Pittsburgh right now. I don't think I had to shovel anything here last year, the small amount of snow was light and melted quickly. But today's storm is going to stick around for awhile. Luckily I did my grocery shopping and errands yesterday, so I can stay home and look out the windows at the pretty snow.
When it's cold weather, I like to make hot chocolate for an afternoon warm-up.
I like to make soup or chili con carne for a quick and easy dinner. Whenever I make chili, I make a double-batch so there's some leftover. Then I freeze the chili in single portions and it's ready to go for chili & cheese baked potatoes.
Chili & cheese baked potato - Take a large potato and bake in the toaster oven, or nuke it until it's just about done. (In the microwave it's about 5 minutes.) Take out the hot potato, slice crosswise and mash in salt, pepper and butter into the potato. Then spoon over about 3 big tablespoons of thawed out chili and sprinkle shredded cheese on top. I usually use cheddar, colby or a "Mexican" mixture, but whatever suits your taste. Put the potato back in the microwave and nuke for another 2 minutes so the chili heats up. And voila - an instant wonderful dinner. Yum!

(42 posts)You can put them in bed to warm it, and then eat them. My secret recipe is that I make tuna salad with chunk light and double mayo and double salt. Go heavy on the butter in the potato and top with a lot of tuna. Put it in a big bowl to minimize the mess.

If I make chili, beef stew or beans and rice, there must be cornbread. With NO sugar/
My mom made amazing Welsh Rarebit (which in KY is pronounced 'rabbit') We always had it on New Year's Eve, and we ate it with pickles, onions and on saltines.
I don't make it because I would eat too much of it and I already eat too much cheese. Every year my dad used to age a wheel of cheddar in the basement of my grandfather's store and when it had aged a couple of years, he brought it out and sold it. It was so sharp, and Mom used it with some regular cheddar to make the rarebit.
