Chuck Barris (Creator of The Dating Game, The Newlywed Game and Gong Show host) wrote a hit rock & roll song.
What was it? (answered)

(9,990 posts)Most Ramones recordings were three-chord wonders. That particular song might have been a heavy lift for them, and Johnny in particular, with verses, choruses, bridge, and modulation thrown in. A bit more complex than most pop songs. I understand that Sonny Bono wrote the song lyrics and Jack Nitzsche the melody and chord changes. Jackie DeShannon, who had a hit with the original recording, has claimed that she participated in the songwriting as well but didn't receive a credit.

He only played on that studio album, and their live album. Mick Ronson, Bowie's band partner, replaced Bender.

They called Wallich's, the go-to, one stop music store in Hollywood. As the gobsmacked clerk read them, Cass jotted the words down, then immediately belted it out in one take, the pro that she was. It reached #12 on the charts.

He offered them Suffragette City. They passed because they couldn't make it "Mott enough".
David was trying to help them out, because he really liked them & they were on the verge of breaking up.
"Dudes" was recorded, saved the ban, and took them on a 3 or 4 year ride as big stars.
When David died, 6 of the still living members of Mott went to the funeral. They knew what ge did for them.

(18,567 posts)The lead singer on that sounded vaguely like Paul, and the arrangement was Beatle-esque in quality.
The irony is that Klaatu was a pretty good band, but the initial surge they got in sales recoiled when people figured out they really weren't the Beatles.

(9,990 posts)One of them was fired from the band and demoted to road manager, for not fitting the proper "image" as conveyed by manager Andrew Oldham. Who was this person, and what instrument did he play?
VGNonly
(8,492 posts)Ian played piano for them.
Correct answer! He played the (mostly uncredited) keys on quite a few Stones tracks even after being unceremoniously tossed out of the band by Andrew Oldham.
demoted him because Ian was older, stocky and square jawed, not a party animal. Stu didn''t fit the image of a rebellious rock band. Keyboardist Nicky Hopkins was more accomplished as was Billy Preston.
The present keyboardist for the Stones is Chuck Leavell. Best known for playing for the Allman Brothers, starting with the Brothers and Sisters album.
Zambero
(9,990 posts)Coincidentally, I'd mentioned Chuck in an earlier and unrelated post above. Stylistically, Stu was certainly less versatile than Hopkins and Preston, or Leavell, although he was very good at what he brought to the Stones, which was adherence and devotion to the blues, boogie-woogie, and R&B. He sat out the slicker pop stuff that came along later. Oldham pushed the "bad boy" image to great effect, and could also be a cold and calculating SOB. His treatment of Brian Jones after taking on the band's managerial duties (ironically brought in by Jones) might have contributed to their founder's eventual demise. Once Oldham was no longer useful, Jagger and Richards pointed him to the door in early '67.
VGNonly
(8,492 posts)Stu and Ian McLagan played keyboards on both tours. In 78 Peter Tosh and Kansas opened. That was at The World Series of Rock in Cleveland. A crazy event marked by general mayhem, bikers and many M80s being thrown. In 81 Iggy Pop and Santana at The Pontiac Silverdome, that was relatively calm.

(76,703 posts)What was the biggest reason Kim Carnes got picked to sing Bette Davis Eyes?
(Clue: The song was written by Jackie DeShannon)
SarahD
(1,732 posts)She has a husky, raspy voice.
ProfessorGAC
(76,703 posts)Not Betty's voice, but Jackie's!
Story goes:
Jackie recorded this song a couple years earlier & both the producer and A&R guy liked it, but the producer thought the arrangement & production was all wrong. Too up tempo, didn't like the steel guitars, thought the piano was to honky-tonk, and so on. But, he liked how Jackie's sounded singing it.
Kim was already a know commodity from her work with David Cassidy & Kenny Roger's. So, she needed to buy in.
Kim didn't like the song as it was either, but wanted to hear what the producer had in mind.
A quick demo with synths, drum machine & bass created the moody, atmospheric sound with a pulse. Kim bought in, agreeing it was perfect because she had the right voice.
Basically, she ended up doing her biggest hit because she sounded like the lady who wrote it.
Later on MTV, Jackie did an acoustic version but with the feel of Kim's version. You know what? She sounded just like Kim!

Johnny came through town one day and my neighbor threw a BBQ picnic for him. He and Johnny fired up the guitars and plodded through a couple songs. Johnny was good and I could believe he was famous. Band was Johnny Green and the Little Green Men.

jmowreader
(53,194 posts)Mr. Linn was the first person to build a drum machine that worked by playing samples recorded from real drums - which is how all current drum machines work. His first machine was the LM-1 Drum Computer. This $5500 machine was quickly superseded by the $3000 LinnDrum, which was eventually superseded by the $5000 Linn 9000...whose software was so bad it put the company out of business.
Chet Atkins invented the wah-wah pedal for himself in the 1950s, but Bradley Plunkett made the first ones that were sold to other guitarists.
