(55,305 posts)They're made so flimsy today they ain't worth diddly. Leather yielded to vinyl yielded to fabric. Arch support is gone, or tiny. We're all going to have flat feet. Is this a podiatrist conspiracy?

(196,674 posts)I wanted the Adidas indoor soccer shoes Sambas. They last forever but they are pricey. I found ASIC volleyball shoes that serve the same purpose for $50/pair so I bought two pair.

(4,473 posts)I did used to have a bit of a shoe fetish, especially dress shoes. I got hooked on this brand called Mezlan. They make absolutely gorgeous shoes that have an understated flair to them. Got lots of compliments from clients and colleagues on my shoes. But I got over that phase of my life and now have a reasonable number of shoes.

(4,473 posts)It was expected to 'dress to impress'. Needless to say, my credit card balances were very high back then! These days, at the twilight of my career, I work in a non client facing position, make more money, work from home full time, and wear shorts, sandals, and t shirts most days (I live in the CA desert). I've had a good run career wise but I'm the happiest now for sure.

I'm not surprised you got many admiring comments. Good on you!
Black pair of lightweight New Balance. I hate shoes that enclose the whole foot and wear Birkenstock clogs 90% of the time. Even got the non-slip professional grade ones for work.

(4,671 posts)and perhaps a few more older ones that overflow a large storage bin. I rotated wearing them according to the wardrobe du jour. Most of them need to be replaced at this stage, but my newest addiction is slipper shoes of felted wool with soles that are good to go outside to let out the dogs (pun intended, hehehe). Got my eye on some Allbirds now. Now retired from making CEOs rich as a disposable wage slave and disposable labor statistic one way or the other, and staying home permanently while sliding down the economic slope is the plan priority so replacement needs to wait for clearances spammed by Temu, hot Honey-ed, or Cap1shopping, hahaha!

And whatever shirt/T-shirt I'm wearing has to color-coordinate, too.

(11,876 posts)I have a pair of Skechers Soft Stride Softie that are non-slip resistant. It was a requirement to wear non-slip shoes when I had a part-time gig as a lunch lady. I find myself still purchasing them for winter use. There's pair #1.
I have a pair of Skechers She's Magnificent slip-ons. That's pair #2.
I have a pair of Skechers D'Lites Fresh Start (all white) and another pair of D'Lites Life Saver (black, white and pink). That's pair #3 and #4.
My newest pair are Asics Jolt 3 (also black and hot pink). This is the first time that I purchased Asics brand and I love them. This is pair #5.
I wear them all but the only ones that I let get muddy, dirty, grass stains, etc. are the Soft Stride Softie. The rest of my kickers are not collector items at all but I keep them pristine.
I generally purchase my kickers from 6pm.com. Once I purchased a pair of Skechers from 6pm and I didn't realize there was hardly any tread on the bottom which became a safety issue when it rained and when I came across certain store floors, asphalts and concretes, it was like walking on ice and it was dangerous. Now when I purchase from 6pm, I check out the image of the treads carefully and if I can't see the tread, I'll look for another shoe.

(4,346 posts)But my spouse has about 7 or 8. However she is a polio survivor and has to have a 1 inch lift on the right shoe. All made more difficult because she wears a size 1. So she pays maybe 50 or so for a pair then $80 for each lift. Finding quality kids size shoes is a major endeavor for her.

I used to wear dress shoes quite a bit when I worked in my former life, wore kind of like an IBM outfit everyday, you know the type, every day with a white dress shirt, T-shirt, dress shoes, fancy pants etc. All mgmt was expected to wear such things but the dress did finally ease up quite a bit in the later years.

Effectively three pair in service. One with enough tread and cushioning to use for walking. One retired from walking but still new/clean enough to wear everywhere else
and one for mowing the lawn.
They get demoted every 2-3 months
