(10,207 posts)I LOVE the Friends theme song and the show is one of my favorites of all time! It got me through some really dark days.
The episode weren't stand alone. In order to "get" the humor you have to know what the stories are with the characters. their relationships, and their situations.
I think I related to it because I was somewhat new to California when the show first aired and I completely related to my friends being my family (heck, at 66 years old they still are)! There's a group of us that have even been roommates on and off for all these years.
What can I say, the show makes me happy

(114,224 posts)(All in the Family, albeit annoyingly bad), Harry Nilson's "Best Friend" from Courtship of Eddie's Father, I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched, The Golden Girls, Dallas, Bonanza, WKRP in Cincinnati, Green Acres, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Hawaii Five-O (original)... and many more--all incredibly recognizable. I suppose I need to include "Friends" though I got really tired of it.

(18,775 posts)The fourteen-year-old son of director Robert Altman, Mike Altman, wrote the lyrics to the theme song "Suicide is Painless". Because of its inclusion in the subsequent television series, he continued to get residuals throughout its run and syndication. His father was paid $75,000 for directing, but his son eventually made about $2 million in song royalties, with payments continuing, from first syndication through the present day, as M*A*S*H (1972) continues in syndication around the world.

(2,940 posts)the seemingly endless fuse burning down through the action scenes of the opening credits was cool, also.
For my money, Hawaii Five-0 is the best. Jack Lord turning toward the camera on the balcony as it zoomed in for a close-up was swag at its best. And the ocean waves at sunset interspersed with the dancers hips and how they stopped and started in time with the music was genius.
Honorable mentions go out to Barney Miller for best bass guitar and the first version of Kojak.

Funeral March of a Marionette (French: Marche funèbre d'une marionnette) is a short piece by Charles Gounod. It was originally written for solo piano in 1872 and orchestrated in 1879. It is perhaps best known as the theme music for the television program Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

Frederick Steiner (February 24, 1923 June 23, 2011)
was an American composer, conductor, orchestrator, film historian and arranger for television, radio and film. Steiner wrote the theme music for The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show and Perry Mason. While Alexander Courage composed the theme music for the original Star Trek TV series (TOS), Steiner's significant contributions to the franchise included composing more of the incidental music for TOS than any other composer, as well as scoring or conducting the music for 29 of the show's 79 episodes. Steiner also composed and orchestrated additional music for Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979),[1] was part of the team of composers for the 1985 film, The Color Purple, which received an Oscar nomination, and was an uncredited composer for Return of the Jedi.[1]

(19,569 posts)one other that I didn't see in my quick scan through the many replies was this one: not really a song, just some music or noise, but fit the show very well I thought.
NYPD Blue (shows the intro in 3 different cast-eras of the decade-long run)

Well.... There are too many!
I love it when a tune that was done for another medium also hits the popular music charts as well. Three of the tunes I listed were popular on the radio when their respective shows came out.

(60,318 posts)In the 1980s, a German scriptwriter wrote a series specifically with an actor friend of his in mind. A funny, take-no-shit actor, Manfred Krug was originally from East Germany, and looked like Everyman. He was one of Germany's most beloved actors. He played a small urban lawyer based in West Berlin. The lawyer, Robert Liebling, handled all kind of small potatoes cases in his two man practice. He smoked cigars and loved green jello, which he liked to eat either chilling out on the sofa in his office or in the bathtub.
The theme music was composed by Klaus Doldinger, who was sort of the German equivalent of Mike Post, who composed themes like Hill Street Blues. Doldinger was more of a jazz musician. Finding an original clip of his Liebling Kreuzberg theme was a real chore, as it is very protected here, even almost 40 years after it first appeared. He has done it live many times, varying it, and much slower than it was when the series aired. I finally found one clip of en episode where the theme song hadn't been muted out. The music reflects perfectly the whimsical atmosphere of the series.
