I've hungered for your touch
A long, lonely time
And time goes by so slowly
And time can do so much
Are you still mine?
I need your love
I need your love
God speed your love to me

(18,567 posts)Time, time, time
See what's become of me
Time, time, time
See what's become of me
While I looked around for my possibilities
I was so hard to please
Look around
Leaves are brown
And the sky is a hazy shade of winter
Hear the Salvation Army band
Down by the riverside
There's bound to be a better ride
Than what you've got planned
Carry a cup in your hand
Look around
Leaves are brown
And the sky is a hazy shade of winter
Hang on to your hopes, my friend
That's an easy thing to say
But if your hopes should pass away
Simply pretend that you can build them again
Look around
The grass is high
The fields are ripe
It's the springtime of my life
Seasons change with the scenery
Weavin' time in a tapestry
Won't you stop and remember me?
Look around
Leaves are brown
And the sky is a hazy shade of winter
Look around
Leaves are brown
There's a patch of snow on the ground
Look around
Leaves are brown
There's a patch of snow on the ground
Look around
Leaves are brown
There's a patch of snow on the ground

(38,045 posts)I miss John Abercrombie's highly intelligent guitar playing enormously, but the catalog he left us is, well, timeless.

(38,045 posts)I lived next door to this guy - who I got to know through his somewhat bizarre girlfriend - who was a great guitarist; he played in ways I'd never contemplated. He didn't make a living as a musician though; he paid the bills managing a record store in Manhattan Beach CA, where he filled the catalog with stuff out of ECM. Because that guy was "out there," and because he greatly influenced my own playing, although we weren't really friends, I just had to go to the record store he managed. I think it was called "Platypus." It's where I first heard Ralph Towner, and going through the bins, I came across "Timeless" and bought the album because Jan Hammer was playing on it, and kids of my ilk in those days were all listening to Mahavishnu Orchestra.
Of course, when I got the album home and played it, my mind was blown, not necessarily by Hammer, although of course Hammer was good. I wore that vinyl out, and replaced it: I'm not sure how many times and when the time came, I got a CD.
I saw John Abercrombie play live maybe 20 or 30 times over the years; several times with Ralph Towner, other times in different incarnations (but never with Jack DeJohnette). (I also once sat next to him at a restaurant in Greenwich Village, rudely listening in on his conversation with a woman he seemed to be dating.)
He was never less than brilliant when he played, and he never made an uninteresting album.
I read once of him by some critic that his guitar playing was "supremely intelligent" and that struck me as an appropriate description and still does. Even what was really his first solo album after going through all those session and back up band sessions - Timeless - was transcendent but he never went backwards.
He never got all that famous; he made a living at it, of course, but he never became a household name, not that he seemed to want that.
I will never forget him and the joy he brought me, especially in difficult times when music was my only release. When I needed peace, the best thing was to listen to a John Abercrombie album.

(68,201 posts)Here's the wonderful Chet Baker with his haunting performance of the song..."Sinatra recorded it again in 1957 with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra.[3] After it emerged as a jazz standard thanks to saxophonists like Getz and Coltrane, 1959 was a banner year for its popularity, being covered by many pop and jazz vocalists.[4]" (from Wikipedia).
