But I buy flavored creamer for my coffee-drinking husband.

(41,932 posts)I was introduced to iced coffee by Pakistani students who informed me that much of the world prefers their tea hot and their coffee cold. (fact check?)
I grew up in the South drinking iced tea all the time and when I moved to Northern states was told that no one drinks iced tea there. Not really true, but 'tea' does usually mean fresh, hot tea.

When I lived in Boston I could get iced tea between Memorial Day and Labor Day. It was always unsweetened.
I grew up on sweet tea and made it for us. We had friends who had never liked iced tea until they had mine.
Now I drink my iced tea straight, but use good teabags and I cold brew it.

(23,694 posts)You can go to a store which has the grinder in the coffee dept, and get some small amounts of beans in different varieties. Then you can test the bitterness factor. Sprouts has a very nice Kona blend that is very smooth.
debm55
(60,568 posts)Freddie
(10,104 posts)Half and half (probably too much) and just a little sugar to cut the bitterness. As a teen (MANY years ago) I worked at a Dunkin and we were told to put a lot of cream in it if the customer wanted cream, and I got to like it that way. Still like Dunkin coffee. No fancy coffee drinks, just regular coffee. My son and DIL like flavored coffee (vanilla, hazelnut) which is gross IMO.
I used to use a Keurig (I know, environment) and recently got an Instant Pot brand coffeemaker. Similar but the coffee is better and hotter.

(15,462 posts)but the ways to make a little special 'treat' are also almost legion.
Cinnamon, nutmeg, chocolate, vanilla, (or a peppermint candy makes an interesting little fillip as well)
And then, how could we forget the tried and true (and so very obvious) - Bourbon, scotch, vodka, schnapps - and just about every other variety of 'spirit' known to man. People have been adding a little extra dash of 'restorative' to their cup - since the cup was introduced. And allowed many a grandmother the pretense that it wasn't really 'drinking'.

(5,393 posts)Half and half will do, but prefer whole milk. The coffee has to be dark/strong to stand up to my additions, lol.
I like the International Delight Sweet Cream creamer. When getting a coffee out at a convenience store I make like a mad scientist with flavored creamers and other goodies. Royal Farms has a nice complimentary selections of flavored creamers and milks to try. Those sugar dispensing machines at Sheetz are the pits, though. Gimme packets!

(14,270 posts)I never add any cream or sugar because I drink it black. I also have an espresso machine and enjoy lattes and cappuccinos at home when I'm reading and I often play barista to family and friends.
I do enjoy tea as well, but tea starts at dinner which is usually around 5PM--British grandparents had an enormous influence.

(9,062 posts)I used to dolly up the cheap instant coffee with cream and sugar to get it down. Then I started working as a dishwasher at a restaurant, and there was always a pot of fresh coffee made. It turns out it was a really good brand (Paul Delima). The balancing act of cream and sugar is inconvenient when working, so I just started drinking it black. It took a week or two to adjust, but I really enjoyed the Paul Delima even more that way and that's been my preference ever since. That said, I don't mind a latte with some raw sugar on occasion (technically that is espresso).

(11,137 posts)So, I am a 'blasphemer'... I like both sweetener and creamer in my coffee. As well as flavoring if I can find one that I like. As to the age old question of 'if stranded on an island with only one of the two items, which would you prefer to have with the crate of coffee that you also saved: sugar or creamer?' I say 'creamer'.
So, a quick story. I once walked into a Radio Shack and ended up helping half the customers there find things. (Mainly because I always loved the store for decades and went there all the time. Since they were all set up the same, well...) The manager was so impressed she offered me a job on the spot. We met a few days later to finalize the offer and so on, and while we were talking she mentioned that they were 'big coffee drinkers around here'. She even mentioned that it may be time for 'number two'. I replied that I also was a big coffee person as well. I also mentioned that I may want another one. (At the time, it was the real thing. Since then I have learned that a manic depressive/anxiety sufferer really should not be drinking caffeine at all, much less in the amounts I used to imbibe.) After we finished the chat, she looked at her mug and the following took place:
HER: Looks like I need that second cup now!
ME: Oh... a second 'cup'...
HER: Yeah... umm, what did you mean?
ME: Pot.
HER: 'POT'?? You normally have two 'pots' of coffee in the morning.
ME: Well, it is summer. During the winter, I can drink it all day long if I have nothing else to do.
HER: *shakes head and picks up jaw from floor*

(11,137 posts)I did. And, we had a decent enough group working there. The issue was the corporate mentality that was taking over the business. They wanted the bell curve to always go up. In that field, such a wish was just that... a wish. But, in the corporate world, that does not matter... especially when the one store which has the best location and therefore the best return rate does manage to implement the desired directives. I can tell you that, about six months after I started there, the manager, the assistant manager, and three 'associates' all quit on the same day and at the same time. We literally locked up the store around two p.m. and left it. That was my experience working for the company that I had frequented since I was 11 years old.
I guess the old saying about never meeting your heroes is true in most respects, eh?

(76,693 posts)When I first started drinking coffee, I was 16 & waiting on tables, starting at 6am on weekends.
I used a little half & half.
Then, I used less, then less, then less, until it made more sense to go full black coffee, rather than bother.
Been drinking it with no additives since I was 18.
BTW: I've seen guys picking coffee in Colombia. They can have that job. Ir's a rough, tedious job.

If I run out of half and half, I get out my little battery powered milk frother and foam up some milk. I love that thing; it foams hot chocolate quite nicely

(4,688 posts)I have learned the correct pacing. Furthermore when I was a pre-teen I had a male cousin that was considered at the time as hyper-active and they gave him some form of speed to slow him down. I know this sounds counter intuitive but I kind of wonder if this is a thing with folks like us who can drink java all day long and avoid the jitters and drink a cup and go directly to sleep. Just maybe we have a little ADHD.
