Tootsie makes them now. At least they have the dignity to admit on their webpage most people freeze them first, which you quickly would find was the only way to make eating one possible.

(29,600 posts)Crunchy granular sugar exterior and a smooth creamy inside. Usually fruit flavored. I liked the pink ones best - they were either raspberry of strawberry. The lemon and orange were good, too. The guy behind the counter would pick out mostly pink ones for me.
There is nothing else remotely like them.
The Vermont Country Store carries them in a box of 12, all different flavors, and ridiculously expensive.

called Olivers. They have a fruit flavors only choice, which might be worth a try. The Vermont country Store variety includes wintergreen, spearmint and peppermint, which I would not want.
One of the review likened the texture/mouth feel to high quality maple sugar candy, which is a description Id agree with.

(24,906 posts)in Ocean City MD. They still make it, but you can't buy it here in stores. You can buy it on-line but with shipping it's kind of expensive. My favorite flavor was spearmint. They also make the best Caramel Popcorn. the larger quantities come in a big metal can.
Another thing I remember from my early childhood in Maryland/Virginia was spearmint licorice. Never seen it in California and I can't even find it anywhwere on the internet. My search did find watermelon licorice made by an Australian company and it's in discount grocery stores here for a cheap price.
