(8,867 posts)A lot of his lines went over our heads when we were in 8th grade.
We used to race home from junior high every afternoon to watch.
On Saturdays Soupy had a hilarious show about a detective called Philo Kvetch (himself) and his evil nemesis, The Mask (also played by Soupy). The Mask, who wore a paper bag over his head, had an evil sidekick named Onions Oregano whose breath was allegedly horrendous. The Mask constantly spritzed him with perfume to drown the stink. The characters chased each other around the NJ dockyards, Palisades Amusement Park, Yankee Stadium and other locations. Another character was Bruno, the Killer Ape.

I'm not sure if HodgePodge Lodge was local - it may have been a Boston show and not Philly area, but it was my favorite and came on WHYY either before or after Mr. Rogers.
I actually met Sally Star 2 or 3 times. The last time was just a few years before she passed. I introduced her to my kids. I also met Pixanne (forgot about her) and Captain and Mrs. Noah. Captain Noah showed some of my artwork on his "Send your pictures to dear old Captain Noah" segment of his show when I was at home recovering from the Hong Kong flu in the early 70s. I drew him and Mrs. Noah on his Ark along with Maurice the Mouse and Mumwop the monster. Chief Halftown frequented our local bowling lanes where my brother and I were on leagues, and I won prizes from a couple of gerbil/hamster races on Adam Adroid's show.

WMT, channel 2 in Cedar Rapids, originally had Marshal J, hosted by Jay Alexander. He was 66 and played a cowboy. After six years, he moved to San Francisco; same gig, much bigger market. He was also one of the first Marlboro men, a model for Levis, and later was the voice of Sea World.
When he left, WMT switched gears and hired local printer and amateur actor Max Hahn to host the Dr. Max Show. He was later joined by Fred Petrick as Mombo the clown, and the show ran for more than 20 years.

In Youngstown - Barney Bean. He basically just hosted a cartoon show, but he did drawings too. If you sent in a card with your name and birthday on it, on your birthday he would draw your initials on a big pad and then make a face out of them, then he would send it to you. Hal Smith who played Otis on the Andy Griffith Show was the Pancake Man on a morning show sponsored by IHOP.
Billy Barty had an afternoon kid's show, he dressed as a ringmaster. The Three Stooges appeared once I remember.
After that the Winchell Mahoney Show would be on channel 11 KTTV with Paul Winchell Jerry Mahoney and Knucklehead Smith. (that one was my favorite)
Soupy Sales and Bozo the Clown had shows but I don't think they were locally produced.
There was a guy on KHJ channel 9 Engineer Bill who had a show with a huge model train set. Later the shows format changed to "9 Island" sort of a sci do/secret agent type of theme. I found an ad for it but I can't say I remember this Zolar fellow at all.
So quite a bit for kids!
When I was 12 we moved to Portland. Talk about culture shock! Only 4 tv stations plus NET (pre PBS).
For kids shows there was Rusty Nails the Clown, who was replaced later by Ramblin' Rod, who was just a guy who wore a vest covered with buttons.

We always heard rumors that Dennie Wayne was drunk on air, not just for his puppet show, but during his weather segment (which mostly consisted of photos of the hottest and coldest places in the country, like Death Valley or International Falls) but years later we ran into Howard Lancour at a Fourth of July event and he confirmed it. (9,083 posts)The Popeye Club: The host was "Officer" Don Kennedy and he had a puppet sidekick, Orvil the Dragon. In addition to games with the kids in the studio audience, The Popeye Club had Popeye (of course!) and The Funny Company cartoons.
Mr. Pix: The host of this was Dave Michaels, who was an anchor with a local Atlanta TV station and later went on to be a CNN anchor. The show took its name from Michaels drawing pictures during the show, including drawing pictures using letters of the alphabet. He would pretend to take suggestions from the kids at home (no studio audience) as to what letters to use in his drawings. I remember watching the show one day and yelling "Z!", "Z!" with all my might and I was totally surprised when Mr. Pix said, "Okay, Z", and made a picture out of it. I don't remember what the picture was. I believe there were cartoons on the show, but I don't remember which ones.
Tubby and Lester: Two guys that were Laurel and Hardy imitators. I believe they had a studio audience with games for the kids. Predictably, Tubby and Lester featured Laurel and Hardy cartoons, as well as Abbott & Costello cartoons.
We had a local version of Romper Room, but I can't remember the name of the teacher. She never saw me in her magic mirror. Also, on one of the local PBS stations, we had a show called "Aunt Lollipop." The host was an older lady who, I think was a teacher. She had groups of kids on her show to whom she told stories.

(23,694 posts)With Captain Bill and Captain Bob. There were two puppets: Bobo the Clown who had a long red nose that would honk and Jingles (maybe an elf?). If you pressed on Jingles' nose it made a jingle bell sound.
They had a studio audience, and at the end of the show the studio audience got to walk past the puppet stage and make the puppets noses do their thing. Someone gave me a trip to the show for my birthday and I decided to annoy Jingles because everybody picked on Bobo.
Captain Bill was actually Bill Jay who did the local news, and Captain Bob was Bob Lobertini who did the weather. Everybody did double duty back in the middle 50s
There were lots of cartoon blocks: Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, Woody Woodpecker in the afternoon.
The NBC station in Nashville had a Bandstand style show called The 5 O'clock Hop. Occasionally the show would go on the road, and they came to one of our local high schools. The gym was packed and it was a fun night.
