An old master instructs his disciple
that he may learn to hear the sound of all life in only he can quiet his mind.
The young disciple begins meditating before an ancient oak every day at midday. He quiets his mind, his eyes focus upon the tree. And nothing happens.
So it goes, day in, day out, year after interminable year. One day the disciple arrives at the tree with an ax in hand.
"Don't kill me for I am but a tree" cried the oak.
Gathering a calm dignity about himself, the disciple replied: "You may be a tree, but you will dialogue!"
