Out in the yard it is called a cellar. Sometimes it is called a root cellar.

Also it is where you go if a tornado is coming thus for old timers it is "A 'fraidy hole".

A basement can be any below-ground space; a cellar is typically an unfinished space used only for storage, not as a living area.

Maybe that's a New England thing..

The the dank, musty, stone and concrete underground space, that the structure of the house sat on. It was scarier than hell. Cobwebs everywhere.
That's what the adults, at our house called it, " the cellar".

You don't play pool or watch TV in a cellar. We had a cellar when I was a kid. That's where we kept the canned fruits and vegetables.
