Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsWhat song/music, would you like played at your funeral/memorial service?
Me: Iots of blue grass. Maybe some Hank Williams. Finish with slow, sad Irish stuff with the uilleann pipes.
I also want it loud.
No, I ain't planning to go nowhere soon. Just thinkin' aloud --- fact is, not even doing that. Just typing loud. You're probably gonna have to put up with me for a few more years.

(11,237 posts)This is the live version, with the string section, they called themselves the Clockwork Stringers. It was magnificent live, I saw that tour twice I think, once was at Halloween and the Stringers dressed for it, which was really fun. This is Rush's last original song on their last studio album ever and now Neil's dead and my heart is broken.

(4,044 posts)Before the album was released, Peart said he was challenging himself in lyrics and drum work to be the best he ever was.
Certainly in terms of lyrics, this song shows it.
Rest in peace to the Ghostrider, Neil Peart.
In this one of many possible worlds
All for the best or some bizarre test?
It is what it is and whatever
Time is still the infinite jest
The arrow flies when you dream
The hours tick away, the cells tick away
The Watchmaker keeps to his schemes
The hours tick away, they tick away
The measure of a life is a measure of love and respect
So hard to earn, so easily burned
The measure of a life is a measure of love and respect
So hard to earn, so easily burned
In the fullness of time
A garden to nurture and protect
In the rise and the set of the sun
'Til the stars go spinning
Spinning 'round the night
Oh, it is what it is and forever
Each moment a memory in flight
The arrow flies while you breathe
The hours tick away, the cells tick away
The Watchmaker has time up his sleeve
The hours tick away, they tick away
The measure of a life is a measure of love and respect
So hard to earn, so easily burned
In the fullness of time
A garden to nurture and protect
It's a measure of a life
The treasure of a life
Is a measure of love and respect
The way you live, the gifts that you give
In the fullness of time
Is the only return that you expect
The future disappears into memory
With only a moment between
Forever dwells in that moment
Hope is what remains to be seen
Forever dwells in that moment
Hope is what remains to be seen
In the fullness of time
A garden to nurture and protect

I anticipate dying on an early Summer evening way off in the future, Then the cremated remains of me and my wife will be driven upstream Mississippi River and dumped in Ole Man River and we will meander south to the Big Easy. We will search for that Lost Shaker of Salt and be together forever Amen. No tears, just another round to toast our lives.

(130 posts)Although I have already discussed with the pertinent folks, some of the music that will be played at a gathering after my demise, its agreed that ONeills March on uillean pipes( accompanied by other instruments) will be the first tune at the occasion- the Chieftains version is best. The end will have Mark Knopflers (Dire Straits) song Going Home played, and then a chorus of friends singing The Parting Glass, a song of Scottish origin, popular in Eire, as immortalized in the brilliant film Waking Ned Devine and the promo ads for Tullamore Dew Irish Whiskey. Dougie MacLeans tune The Gael ( Last of the Mohicans ) is on the list. Although a fiddle-driven tune, has had many interpretations on pipes - Scottish highland, Irish Uillean, Breton, and Northumbrian. Check out Clanadonia( on YouTube) a group of Scottish street musicians that are entertaining and fun. There will be music from all over at my gathering, from Calypso, Soca, west African, and any musicians that contribute to Playing For Change, especially the version of All Along the Watchtower , Hendrix style, the best Rock n Roll song in my book, and another of his tunes Little Wing by the Corrs with guest Ronnie Wood of The Rolling Stones.

(11,005 posts)There isn't anyone left to attend, let alone take care of it for me when I'm dead!
Besides, I'd like to be 'planted' under a tree, so I can provide the nutrients for it to grow big and strong.
Green burial.
But if some sort of music had to be played, it would definitely be this. Because I'd like all of the spirits to get up and dance!
Come to think of it, I would want this one as well. It's my 'deserted island' music. If I could only have one song to listen to If I were stranded on a deserted island, this would be it.

(15,675 posts)I'm 52 now, and I don't want family choosing songs that don't represent me. Also, I'll be paying for my funeral, leaving instructions for the niece most likely to follow them, which might include a merch table where you can get a copy of my playlisy.
Anyway, the closing song will be this...

(17,428 posts)to lighten the mood, then hit 'em with Soon from Yes (just a fantastic vocal performance from Jon Anderson), then wrap it up with "Love Reign O're Me", because isn't that what life is all about.
I think I would like to end to the sound of Keith Moon trashing the studio drum room, like at the end of that song.

It fits, because there will be no memorial service about me.
I'd rather people just move on with their own lives and not dwell on me after I'm dead.
