(6,991 posts)I like the way its loping drumbeat gives it a forward momentum that I don't feel in the somewhat herky-jerky drumbeat of the original. Also gotta love Tom Scott's sax solo.
I once heard a radio interview with Petty in which he said he liked this version too. He said he'd forgotten he had given his friend McGuinn permission to record the song, and then one day heard it on his car radio
Their voices sound similar enough that Petty was mystified at first, and was asking himself, "Huh. When did I record this version?"

(28,603 posts)...that almost rivalled Hendrix's. It was jaw-dropping--I never thought anybody could outdo Hendrix's, but she came close! I heard it on a satellite radio program, but I cannot find it ANYWHERE on the Internet. Wish I could--I'd love to hear it again!
(*Yes, she's the singer who gave us that silly roller-skate song ("Brand New Key"
, the "Nickel Song", and "Lay Down (Candle In The Rain)"--quite a talent, actually.)

(21,898 posts)The first time I heard of Disturbed was when the remake of Dawn of the Dead came out. I loved the Richard Cheese cover of Down With the Sickness:
Then, some years later When my brother told me Disturbed had done the cover of The Sound of Silence, I thought Oh fuck, how badly did they screw up this masterpiece But I was so dead wrong. It really is a brilliant cover.

(40,404 posts)Helen Wiggin playing a left handed drum kit was a thing of wonders and amazement. If she had just found her backbeat, the Shaggs would have been 'better than the Beatles' (Frank Zappa). To his credit, left handed drummer, Ringo Starr playing a right handed kit found a unique backbeat that frustrated the Hell out of professional drummers trying to emulate it.
