(1,732 posts)I like the ooey gooey sweetness. I have to bake several for family gatherings because people go insane for it. I also make buttermilk pecan for those too wimpy to stand up.to pure sugar.

If I am taking others into consideration it would have to be apple - homemade and thin crust with 3-4 different kinds of apples in the filling.

(72,523 posts)The real thing is so hard to get, though. Key limes are yellow, not green. Any time someone serves Key lime pie with green lime slices, I'm grateful for the effort, and it usually tastes tangy and lovely. But it's just not the same.

(29,685 posts)But I don't totally believe in favorites, so cherry, blueberry, lemon meringue, and pumpkin chiffon get to come to the party, along with chicken pot pie and Cornish pasties.

(14,307 posts)Any kind, as long as there is more fruit than thickened juice. Chunks--big chunks!
But...having said that, I make a pineapple meringue pie to die for. I smooth out the fruit, but there are little bits. It is like crushed pineapple bits amidst silky smooth curd. I do the same with tangerine.
I never use canned fruit.

(17,757 posts)I spend several years in Miami, in the mid 90s, and between Miami and Homestead there was a Key Lime pie shop, it may have been in the Goulds community; it was all the baker did. The shop was open when he had pies and closed when he sold out. It was in a rather "rough" area, crimewise, but it was worth the risk to stop. Everytime I drove by the place I looked for the sign and if he was open, the family got a treat that night.
In that same general area was where Strawberries were grown. There was a Minnonite family that owned one of the farms, and they had a roadside stand where you could buy fresh, ripe berries, Strawberry milkshakes; the food was so gooooood! You just don't buy vine ripened berries at the grocery store and the difference in quality is amazing. I felt like I won a trifecta when I got a pie and a milkshake and a basket of berries on the same day. I gained a lot of weight in Miami.

So instead of 3/14 being March 14th, it would need to be 31/4 being April 31st. But since April only has 30 days, April 31st would fall on May 1st...

After over 100 years, this iconic London pie and mash shop is closing for good
Traditional south London diner M Manzes opened in 1914
https://www.timeout.com/london/news/after-100-years-this-iconic-london-pie-and-mash-shop-is-closing-for-good-011624

Another classic pie and mash shop bites the dust. The Deptford branch of the M Manzes chain will be closing its doors for good in March 2025, as owner George Mascall announces his retirement. Other recent pie and mash closures include Walthamstows L Manzes, while Islingtons M Manzes closed in 2017. Two London branches of M Manzes remain; Peckham and Tower Bridge Road as well as an outpost in Sutton.
The Tower Bridge Road branch is the oldest eel and pie shop in London, originally opened by pie shop pro Robert Cooke in 1891 and taken over by his son-in-law Michele Manze in 1902. It was the first 14 stores to bear the Manzes name, most of which are now closed. The Manze family originally hailed from Ravello on the Amalfi coast in southern Italy.
Maybe the next owner will keep it as a pie and mash shop but I certainly wont be involved, George Mascall told Southwark News. A lot of customers will be upset and they reckon theyll have a tear in my eye when the shutters go down... Im certainly looking forward to retirement.
At the end of last year the Deptford store was granted Grade II listed status by Historic England, with its tiled interior, wooden benches, and terrazzo flooring praised for being a rare and well-preserved eel, pie and mash shop of the early C20, representing a distinct vernacular cuisine that formed a staple of working-class life in London.
