run away because it was sick of it's mate.? Did it get sucked in the washing machine? Is it clinging for dear life on a towel? Where is it??????????

(11,276 posts)I purchase socks that can be mated with another sock if the original mate goes missing.
I'm hard on socks because I walk frequently and my socks will receive newly developed holes in only one sock. So what I do is throw away the one holey one and I forget to find the weakest link one to follow suit in the trash. I have enough cleaning towels and cleaning rags so I don't need to save a holey sock for cleaning.
My major issue with the dryer is that I keep two wool balls in the dryer at all times. The wool balls help lessen drying time and help keep bulkier items from getting entangled together.
However, sometimes the wool dryer balls go missing because they either:
1. rolled out of the dryer as I was removing items and I didn't see it
2. get stuck in a pantleg or shirt sleeve
3. get stuck in a corner of a fitted bedsheet
The missing wool dryer balls don't generally go missing for a long time but it is annoying when it happens.
I don't really have socks that need to go on a missing poster though.

(11,717 posts)There are probably about ten unmatched socks down there just waiting to be recognized by their owners.
Once those are cleared away more will appear.

(24,535 posts)Sometimes, the mate shows up within a few laundry cycles. Other times, the sock turns into a key that fits no known lock.

(8,016 posts)Years ago there was a Ren & Stimpy episode where they went on some sort of mind trip (maybe ate mushrooms?), totally tripping & hallucinating, & ended up in the place where all the lost socks went.
Then, a few (?) years ago Stranger Things did an episode where two of the characters went on what looked like an LSD trip, totally tripping & hallucinating, & ended up in the place where all the lost socks went.
There's enough time between the two that I swear the Stranger Things writers MUST have seen that Ren & Stimpy episode because they copied it in so much detail. I loved it.
Anyway, those two episodes of those two shows will give you your answer.

(2,548 posts)You know, like the portal in that Twilight Zone episode "Little Girl Lost" when the parents woke up hearing their little girl's voice but could not find her. It was an invisible temporary hole that opened up in the wall behind the little girl's bed, and then the family dog disappeared into it too, and then the family's physicist friend came over and found the hole, marked off its boundaries on the wall, and held on to the little girl's father while he partially disappeared into the hole and pulled the little girl and the dog back out as the hole was closing up. There is a hole into another dimension just like that one that opens up whenever you turn your dryer on, and one or two socks always disappear into it.
