(9,850 posts)But, to answer your question, I like my fries with ketchup in most settings. However, at the Potato Patch at Kennywood Park in West Mifflin PA (perhaps you're familiar with it!) I get cheese & garlic salt. My dad loved them with gravy.
A friend of mine likes fries with mayo. I know that's very European, but...GROSS! (I can't stand mayonnaise.)

(5,455 posts)But sometimes I like a little bit of Grey Poupon mustard on them. I NEVER use ketchup. It changes the flavor of fries completely. To me.
debm55
(57,778 posts)But then I dip them in ketchup as I eat them. Putting ketchup on top makes them soggy, and I like mine very crisp!

(1,112 posts)I like fries with malt vinegar or ketchup or just salt, which might explain why I am in a weight loss group (no drugs, just the exercise program of pushing away from the table). We are visiting Canada in the fall so maybe I'll WALK to a bistro and try fries with gravy.

(514 posts)oh, the looks I get ! I asked in one place and the waitress serving us, upon asking for tartar sauce said incredibly dryly... 'There is nothing we serve that takes tartar sauce'. I said apparently there is because you have french fries and I want tartar sauce ! that along with my medium rare arriving well done - no tip. She was not respectful.

(11,639 posts)In all seriousness, it's extremely rare that I eat french fries but when I do ...those fries are homemade and in a small serving size and lightly salted with pink Himalayan salt.
I can't eat french fries from a restaurant.

(2,554 posts)I hate ketchup. Potatoes have a flavor. It's a wonderful flavor. Why cover it up? I love that potato-ey flavor and I want to experience it. Too often that wonderful potato-ey flavor gets cooked out of French fries, as well as baked potatoes, mashed potatoes, tater tots, au gratin potatoes, potato sticks, potato chips, there are a million ways to cook potatoes, and whenever I eat potatoes in any form, I always want to experience that wonderful potato-ey flavor. I have visited Belgium twice. In that country they dip their fries not in ketchup, but in mayonnaise. I hate ketchup, but I love mayonnaise, so I tried my fries that way. Incidentally, I think Belgium is actually the origin country of French fries, not France. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong about that. But in this country, I eat my French fries bare-ass naked. I mean the fries are bare-ass naked, not me. Sorry about the unintentional imagery.
