I've had a lot of shit wrong with me in my life, but nothing this bad.
I've been doing a lot of physical work.
Blew my back out while gardening a few weeks ago. Every time this happens, I tell myself that this is the worst it's ever been. I've had several MRIs on my spine, and at that time, it showed various "moderate" damage to several vertebrae.
Whatever the hell this shit is, it's not "moderate".
I'm actually scared to go to the ER, because they will do a CT scan. It literally takes me close to a half an hour to get into bed at night, and I've been using a portable urinal so I don't have to re-live that torture at 300am. I don't think I could lay on a CT table without sedation.
Dug out an old bottle of Oxycodone. Taking just half a pill at a time because they don't make me feel good. I'm also eating muscle relaxants. Neither are doing much good.
Called my provider and asked her to put me on Prednisone. Started it this morning, and it's already making me puke and jump right through my own ass. It's also shooting my blood glucose into the 300's even after doubling my basal insulin dose.
Just spent the last half hour sobbing and screaming in the shower.
YAY!
No need to respond. I just wanted to type this out. I don't think I'll be able to address any responses.
I'm just hoping it goes away. It always does.
Thanks for reading.
Keep up the good fight.

(60,317 posts)the ER or at least tell your doctor exactly how much pain you've been in, and for how long. This sounds too serious for you to keep trying to ignore it.

(22,260 posts)LuckyCharms, I hope you see these replies and take the advice of highplainsdem to get medical care asap.
If a CT scan is what is needed and you can't tolerate it for sedation, the by all means, ask for sedation! (Just be sure you have someone to drive you home afterwards.)
Please rake care of yourself and get the help you need,

(141,926 posts)(I'm a lawyer, NOT a doctor,' but have had sciatica.)
Sciatica can cause a range of symptoms, including:
Pain
Pain that starts in the lower back or buttock and radiates down one leg. The pain can feel dull, aching, shooting, or burning. It can also feel worse in the leg than in the back.
Sensation changes
Numbness, tingling, or loss of sensation in the leg, foot, buttocks, thigh, or pelvis.
Pressure on the sciatic nerve can cause pain and often numbness down a leg. Self-care measures might help.

(8,575 posts)I finally succumbed to facing it, after years of chiropractic, acupuncture, advil, tequila, etc. Got an MRI, took to chiropractor, she said, "I'd find a good surgeon." I did. Problem solved. I had heard so many fearful stories about it, but the next morning when I got out of bed the pain was gone. (New pain during recovery, of course, but quite manageable.) Now I'm back in the garden and no advil required! Tequila only for a celebration, not a lifestyle!

Please, please, please go to the E.R. or call your provider for further evaluation and treatment.
I also believe that your at the point for daily and absolutely non-strenuous physical therapy my friend.
Anyways....here I am sending you PAWsitive healing energy and vibes!

(21,535 posts)through this. It definately takes the wind out of your sails. And prednisone always made me feel like PMS; irritable is not an adequate word. Invaluable for poison ivy though!
Take care and I hope better days are ahead.
P.S. Get the CT scan or MRI. At least you'll know what is going on and it is painless and non-invasive. Take anti-anxiety meds prior. Docs are understanding in this regard. I'm claustrophobic and you need to knock me out if I go into a tube. Where it is your back, you may not need to. I'm fine if my head is sticking out! The imaging from CT's and MRI's are invaluable.

(5,165 posts)In my case it was a couple of herniated discs though your case could be entirely something else. I see a pain management guy who injects the area with steroids a couple times a year. They help a LOT. Surgery has been discussed but I'm not willing to endure the recovery. Besides I'm a terrible patient and my wife would murder me before I got better ... she'd be completely justified too.
Once you're feeling less trashed, you might find PT helpful. They show you exercises and you have to do them every day. Once you're in better shape, start some back exercises to build up the muscles. Strong back muscles can help take stress off your spine, discs and what have you.

(7,880 posts)It sounds like sciatica - does the pain subside when you are in certain positions? If muscle relaxants aren't working, maybe it's the nerve. Just a layperson's 2 cents. I defer to the experts!
Take care, Lucky! Sending good vibes your way!

(22,771 posts)I had a lot of back ailments, but got treatment and therapy from an excellent doctor and PTs. It took some time, but I got over sciatica and then healed from muscle spasms without surgery.
When you get better, maybe you can get one of the large therapy balls and some sessions with PT for how to use it. I got one in '96 and used it every day for years for back muscles, then slacked off.
Please let us know how you do

(3,458 posts)I'm very sad to hear you're dealing with this. Just want to offer some words of commiseration as well as a few suggestions as I am also at the tail end of a 3-month bout of neck and upper back pain from a bulging disc and nerve compression. When I initially went to my PCP he prescribed waaayyyy too strong a steroid for me, and I was literally sick-- trembling, nauseas, and face on fire-- from the steroid. I stopped the steroid with the PCP's blessing, then after a break my orthopedist started me up on a much lower dose that I could tolerate, which did help. Steroid can be nasty, but dosed properly it can be a godsend.
Other things I've used with some success: Curamin (turmeric supplement), infrared light therapy wrap (https://a.co/d/fJQBb9j), topical NSAIDs including Aspercreme and Voltaren, plus a good, soft ice pack and heating pad alternated. And physical therapy (of course).
In any case, here's hoping you're on the road to recovery very soon. But DO listen to all the good advice here and get to the doctor PRONTO.

(40,855 posts)I have a lot of lower back problems, sciatica pain, with a history of two back surgeries. Prednisone helps me, but I know taking steroids is not good for you. I have found using my inversion table, along with rest for a few days does more good than anything. Not a cure, but it helps.

(9,297 posts)My two go-tos for pain at home are my TENS unit and ice. I'm not opposed to pills, but no pill starts working immediately. TENS and ice do.
My TENS units are from Techcare. Yes, I have more than one; sometimes I need it before trying to get to another room. I use the smallest and cheapest of their units, and they are good enough to relieve (and over a period of an hour or two actually remove) my back pain even when it has spiked down my leg as far as the knee.
If the TENS hasn't made noticeable improvement in 5-10 minutes I go to ice. I know some people use frozen peas, but I do better with strap-ons because they stay put.
Neither is any substitute of a hospial if you need one, and it really sounds like you do.

(10,725 posts)Is powdered raspberry aspirin with caffeine. It comes in a packet you shake into your mouth - then follow up with water.
3 months ago, I went flying when the handlebars came off my dolly and I did in my back good. I had some 10 yr old oxys which helped the first week.
Stewart McGill is the most famous back injury go to guy in the US - He is famous for his McGill 3 back muscle strengthening exercises to help with back pain. I do them everyday- takes 12 minutes. Took 3 months & my back pain is finally 95% gone but my legs are now bothering me. Powered aspirin with caffeine stops my leg pain for hours.
I feel for you -
I do these on a massage table so I dont need to be on floor.

Pace yourself during strenuous exercise. Stretch exercise to limber up a bit before hand, like start a few days before, similar to a marathon runner, losen up tight unworked muscles. This will help avoid strain.

(22,003 posts)I'm still suffering.
Wrote my primary care yesterday, but it was late in the day, and I didn't get a response.
What usually happens is I deal with this until I can't any longer, and then I go to the ER. They usually do a CT scan, and throw pain pills at me, which I am hesitant to take...that's why I have a surplus of them at home. Then, the pain just resolves after a month or so.
I thank everyone for their kind responses. I swear that you people show more concern than my friends in real life.

(32,574 posts)Your primary care physician could refer you to an orthopedic doctor, who would know much more about back issues than she does.
Also, I know this might sound crazy, but have you tried medical marijuana? I've heard it can actually relieve pain in some cases.
(You should definitely check with your PCP before trying it)
Anyway, I hope you're out of pain soon.
