Brought her in with the notion I'd be bringing her home with a treatment plan. Instead, I brought her home to bury her. Vet was honest, which I appreciated. There was a mass in her abdomen, and she probably wouldn't survive surgery if they'd attempted it. She was 14. I will miss her.

(81,119 posts)You had her for a long time.
There will be a grieving process.
I am glad the vet didn't put her through a needless surgery
and she didn't suffer.

(5,370 posts)This was a vet I'd never met before. Kitty was so listless I decided to take her in before the appt. she had next week. Vet was so kind and asked if I wanted to leave the room. I said I couldn't imagine leaving an animal alone at a time like this. They need your warmth and your presence So as hard as it was, I stayed.

(81,119 posts)Oh yes, I had a dear little doggie who had inoperable cancer, she has to be put down.
I stayed with her for the procedure. As long as I was with her she was calm.
She needed me with her or would have been agitated and fearful.
When it was over I cried like a baby. It was so sad and such a shock.

(7,782 posts)May Bast receive her in Her loving arms as she crosses the Rainbow Bridge. I know the hole in your heart and soul right now. I hope Bast will also give you peace and help you find comfort in the good times you've shared with your baby.

(9,027 posts)We went the prednisone route, and got him about 3-4 more months of reasonably good life, but it was always a losing battle. In the end we had him put to sleep about a week ago.
No judgement here; each situation is unique.
It really does hurt to have a pet you have known and loved leave you.
I always have said that pets are like children that never grow up. There with you for life, and that usually means a lot shorter time than we would like to have with them.

(5,370 posts)Temperature was dropping, gums pale. Vet didn't think she'd make it 24 hours. But I'm glad that extra time with your furry guy.

Please honor her and yourself in a way that only you and your family? can.
She'll be with you in many ways tomorrow and beyond.

(27,612 posts)You go to the vet hoping she'll be coming home with you, but it doesn't happen. Gradually coming to grips that she's not there to welcome me home or snuggle next to me on the sofa. She was my "bestie" for 19 years. Left a hole in my heart. You will feel the same. My heart goes out to you.

(9,083 posts)I lost a cat almost two years ago to feline leukemia. She ate ravenously--she was diabetic--but didn't seem to be gaining any weight. The vet who examined her determined she had leukemia and that it was incurable. She was 18. Condolences on your loss!

(5,989 posts)That really sucks. It is bad enough when you are pretty sure that's going to be the outcome but it is 10 times worse when you aren't expecting it. I had a similar experience - although it sounds like you had a better vet!

(7,537 posts)Ours put our cat on steroids and gave us a few days to adjust (we had a family tragedy about which they did not know). That cat took her steroids in vanilla ice cream and ate nothing else for a few days until we managed to take her back. She was clever like that...cat food?? There is ice cream.
It is always hard, sometimes though it is just awful. I understand.
