(15,107 posts)We had 2 and they were absolutely awesome. But we have since gotten only rescues and we love them all. Abys have gotten expensive and the rescues need homes.
Still, if I ever saw an Aby at a rescue, I'd scoop it up.

Get your cat fixed so you don't have give that responsibility to someone else. That is how we got all of our cats, except for the Siamese. who was a rescue.

(23,694 posts)Two are Formerly Feral Felines who decided they liked it here and stayed. They live in the house now.
Two others just kind of showed up but they looked well cared for so probably just wandered around and decided we were their people. One was a lost tiny kitten our friend found in a grocery store parking lot. She brought her to us because she wanted us to have a new cat since we had just lost our GOAT kitty. She lived to be 17.
And lest we forget, the Failed Foster. She would not socialize so she stayed with us. Her sisters were easy to socialize and were adopted together.
My GOAT cat just jumped out of a tree one afternoon when I came home from work, marched in the house and made himself at home. I still miss that cat and he has been gone for 38 years.

(85 posts)I had a beautiful Russian Blue boy (rescued) who was a wonderful, affectionate cat. They are very loyal. Sadly, he went outside (I keep my cats in now) and crawled back through the cat door at night. He had broken his back. We and the vet had no idea how. But I had to let him go. Saddest thing for me.

(145 posts)I would have to say bobtails. We have had so many bobtail babies. I know theyre not pure Manx or Cymric but they have some of the features and qualities. They make wonderful pets and can live 17-19 years if kept indoors.
We have 5 now, inside. 4 bobs and one with a tail.
We also provide food, medical care and shelter for 2 almost ferals. They wont stay in the house proper. They live in our sunroom (heat & cool) and are free to go & come as they please through cat doors.

(9,019 posts)Snowshoes are a rare breed from Philadelphia in the 1960s - a combination of Siamese and American Shorthair with gorgeous blue eyes. (23,694 posts)However the cat I would most love to have is a Maine Coon Cat.
If not that, a Siamese or other cat with blue eyes. I miss having a blue-eyed cat.
A polydactal of any breed.
SO I guess my ideal cat would be a blue-eyed Maine Coon with extra toes.

I swore that when Kimmie died I would never get another cat. but you know how that goes. Tinker the one eyed cat. will be our last.

(2,634 posts)I love all cats, but I've had three Russian blues (a mother/son pair when I was young) and a now rather ancient Russian Blue who was a rescue kitty many years ago. They are highly intelligent, very affectionate, and very elegant.

Then, the one partly behind the fridge pounced right after I took the pic.
She jumped onto his butt. He barely reacted. He just looked over his shoulder, then did nothing.
Amazing how well they get along after only 6 weeks.

(60,612 posts)Our dog is too old to go on serious hikes, and bobcats really avoid humans - they dash away quickly. They prefer smaller prey.

(1,680 posts)But I have to say my husband's cat, a short hair tuxedo cat, was the reason I adopted 6 more kitties. Cat, (my husband named her when he was 8,) had beautiful black and white markings and under her bottom lip she had a perfect teardrop of black against her soft, white fur. Smartest and most determined cat ever! I miss her so very much.

starting at age 5-6. I once commented on a thread here at DU that it takes me about 30 seconds to fall in love with a kitten, and some smartass replied, How come so long?
Ive had assorted shades of tabbies, male and female gingers, a Manx, a Turkish swimming cat, a black cat, an all gray, and a gray and white.
Weve had as many as 5 cats at one time. I think the big jump is from 2-3. After 3, is just, Hey, whats one more?
Weve also had blue eyed cats, and, for me, theres something extra special about cats with blue eyes. Our first looked like a rag doll but had short hair. We only had him for 2,1/2 years and were devastated when he had to be euthanized after throwing a blood clot that paralyzed his hind quarters. It was something called a saddle thrombus, caused by hypertrophic cardiomyopathy -a silent heart disease that leads to thickening of the walls of the heart, which causes blood clots to form. There are usually no symptoms, and there is no treatment once a clot breaks loose.
After that beautiful boy left crossed the Rainbow Bridge, our next blue eyed cat was a dainty little female lynx point Siamese who was with us for 14 years. Our third blue eyed guy was a rag doll mix with medium long hair. He developed a lot of chronic illnesses and died in 2020.
That left us with our black and brown tabby boy, and tuxie female, both of whom have lovely green eyes. I missed having blue eyed cats, and 2 didnt feel like enough, so about 18 months ago, we adopted a brother sister pair of Siamese mix kitties. The brother is a blue point with pale blue eyes, and the sister is a very dark seal point with vivid blue eyes. They are a gorgeous pair, and I could stare at them all day.

(11,850 posts)As far as domestic cats that I've been blessed to have the following in my life:
I've had two American Shorthairs previously. One was orange and the other was white and gray. I'm not sure if I have any digital photos of these two cats, so for right now I'll just mention them.
Turkish Van (Starr)

Bombay (Bermuda)

Tabby (Moppet) Sometimes spelled Moppit, no one in the house ever agreed how to spell her name

Today is the one year anniversary where we lost our senior 19 year old Moppet. She had chronic kidney disease, high blood pressure and several other age related issues.
