Those pesticides could be the reason so many old folks bow to trump.🤔
But it is so great to be adult, with an extra buck here and there and stand in front of the ice cream cooler at the grocery store and just be confused and thrilled at all the options.

(436 posts)But one has appeared this summer where I live now. The first time I've seen one in a long time. My 5-year-old grandson was visiting a few weeks ago and we heard the truck heading our way. He was so excited! He had never gotten ice cream from a truck before. He got a Sponge Bob Square Pants on a stick variety. (I can't remember the flavor). I had as much fun as he did!

Couldn't even look at ice cream for years afterward.
As a side note I was probably the first female ice cream "man" in NJ.

(11,879 posts)... sometimes on the type of truck, sometimes on how much money I had in my pocket.
Fudgesicles, ice cream sandwiches, Italian ice, popsicles, whatever they called those good humor bars with the chocolate on the inside (eclairs, maybe?) - all were possibilities for me.

(1,964 posts)I cant remember which product we got. Dad paid for it and I ate it before we got back to the front door.
Later, we were in a neighborhood that was served by an actual truck that played pop goes the weasel. Mostly, by that time the family freezer was well stocked with ice cream in the summer. On the the rare occasion when ice cream was purchased from the truck the kids across the street (freezer also well stocked) would stand in their doorway and chant ice cream man sells dope until the truck moved along down the street.
Moral of the story: Pop Goes The Weasel makes ice cream taste better and makes the neighbor kids envious.

Edit: was looking for a pic of the Mickey Mouse bar and found this Pinterest page with lots of stuff I had forgotten about. Ah, nostalgia!

The ice cream pictured there is a little different than I remember. The ones we had didnt have such defined facial features, especially the mouth, and the eyes were small gumballs. Half the fun was opening the wrapper and seeing how hideously distorted the face was. 😁

(40,691 posts)... including bailing them out of jail, or them rescuing me myself from feral homeless human situations.
As little kids playing in the street we heard the ice cream man and one of my brothers ran into the house and took a dollar out of my dad's wallet and then flagged down the ice cream man and bought ice cream for just himself, taking 95 cents in change!
The rest of my siblings and I ran to my dad, who was gardening in the back yard, and told him of this great injustice.
My dad immediately herded us all into his car so we could chase down the ice cream man. We caught up with him and my dad told us we could buy anything we liked. Even two ice creams!
Except for my brother. He had to return the 95 cents and stay in the car.
Another lesson learned, my brother grew up to be one of the most generous people it's ever been my privilege to know.
Practical justice, thank you Dad.

(18,572 posts)Partly, that was driven by finances -- popsicles were a nickel, most of the more glamorous things were a dime. But there are still times I long for a lime Popsicle.
And you could share your popsicle with a friend. When two only have one nickel between them, that means something.

(18,572 posts)... buy donuts and snack cakes right off the truck. Boy, did that make me jealous!
I was the Ice Cream man myself for a few months in 1975. But the most popular brand then was bootleg cigarettes sold outside of high schools. I didn't do that myself (no high schools on my route), but people were cleaning up selling cigarettes at a buck a pack when they were like 35 cents in the store.

(4,089 posts)Yes, I remember some of the sounds of youth and seasons and the normal of my growing-up.
Others growing-up may and indeed is just about guaranteed to have been different.
For the kids in Montevideo, Uruguay, that beckoning sound signals the arrival to the barrio of the slowly moving camioneta (small truck) carrying 13.5 kilo garafas of cooking gas. So one runs out and flags it down.
