I went to Birka. Its a Viking reenactment village. They brought in houses from the 1700s so not really Viking age. But did have a lot of older stuff in the museum.
One of the thatch roof houses I went in had one of those beds. But smaller. The whole house was about the size of a two car garage. Bend over to get in the door. First thing you see is a small stable. To the left a kitchen/living room. To the right the bedroom. Pretty much just a chair, hutch, and the bed.
Edit: I forgot to mention. One of the reasons they said it was used for was when someone came over from another town. Since travel between cities may take awhile and traveling at night could be dangerous. It might even be a future husband to their daughter.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
