close zingers / lightening that struck very close to my place, somewhat further away from my Mom and Dad's place. It was something out of this world, literally! Caught the tree on fire too. It burned for days afterwards, and it was kind of neat to watch, being that the flames were on the inside of the tree (it was apparently mostly hollow by then).

There was this little "zzzt" sound & then CRACK!! Lightning hit the tree across the street. OMG! It was so loud & the hairs on my arms stood up & there were shreds of bark everywhere. The tree had a huge burn & died about a year later.

I was a few feet from another strike that hit the ground between my house & the one next door. It's intense & deafening.

I was taught as a child not to go near a tree in a thunderstorm - or even before the rain starts, when you can see the lightning.

Not surprised that a tree got struck by lightning. But, it surprises me that people were outdoors near a tree when there was lightning. Even more surprising, though - a PALM tree in ARIZONA? Who knew? I didn't.
