117. Yes! "And Your Bird Can Sing" was the intro music to "The Beatles" Saturday-morning cartoon.

That's where I first heard it. Sadly, I think the reason for that was that Lennon, who wrote the song, just hated the finished work. I've read that he declared it "a horror".

I think that's what kept the song off of the U.S. release of the Revolver album. It became kind of a cast-off, and was relegated to accompanying the opening credits of a Saturday-morning kiddie cartoon show, or added to the collection of odds and ends that was released in the U.S. as "Yesterday...and Today".

I'm sure sorry to know that the author of the song was so dissatisfied with it. Each time I listen to it, I'm filled with a euphoria that I can scarcely describe.

An amusing pop song with a deeper meaning going only to the depth that the Corsican octopus collects bright colored objects. Does not refer to matters of war/peace (Lennon), love (McCartney) or things of the spiritual world (Harrison).

This song just wants to make you sing along. I could see a class of elementary school kids singing this and having a great time. It is a very happy song, unlike some other Beatles tunes which have a darker more melancholy side despite seeming equally nonsensical.

The Beatles were masters of well crafted pop and I believe this is their finest example.

Ringo is GOD!

When Ringo was filming The Magic Christion with Peter Sellars, Sellars invited him out for a weekend on his yacht, to the Island of Corsica near Italy. When they were docked Ringo looked down into the clear waters and noticed quite a large gathering of multi colored glass, shells and whatever made the area quite visible. He asked the Captain what that was and he told him there was a certain breed of Octopus who gathered those brightly colored objects to attract a mate.

Another bit of trivia is that Octopus's Garden was one of the two Beatles songs written by Ringo. The other was Don't Pass Me By.

all of the early stuff that was big to dance to. I would say "Any Time At All" and "Tell Me Why" are two of the best to just get out there and dance to. The whole "Hard Day's Night" album is good for me. "Rubber Soul" and "Revolver" were maybe less about dancing and by the time we hit "Sgt. Pepper" of course dancing to the Beatles was pretty much done although the songs were fine. I'm just a '50's kid who started on Ricky Nelson, Danny and the Juniors and Doo Wop songs. So when the Beatles hit we were still about going to dances and riding around in cars.

That song is eff-ing brilliant. Somebody on the Beatles channel on Sirius satellite radio revealed something I never knew about the lyrics. He said that in the early 1960s people were trying to read profound meanings into Beatles lyrics and John Lennon wrote those weird lyrics to that song in an attempt to mess with those people. But if that was his purpose, he failed. I thought back to my first few hearings of that song, and as weird as those lyrics seemed at first, after perhaps a dozen times hearing the song, those weird lyrics started making a strange sort of sense to me. Now, I think those brilliant lyrics fit the tone of that song perfectly. And it's a song that I will NEVER get tired of. If I had ever been father to a girl, and I got to name her, I would have named her (first and middle names) Semolina Pilchard.

My other two favorite Beatles songs: When I'm 64 and Eleanor Rigby. Not that I'm confining it to just those three songs; the Beatles are the best band EVER and they wrote a gazillion great songs.

186. An interesting sub-category of this theme ...

What would be your favorite relatively obscure Beatles song? The Beatles are such a great band that even their less well known songs, and songs that are usually not included in lists of their best songs, are great songs. There are not many groups that are THAT good. Among potential nominees for this honor would be songs that are NOT among the ones that posters have mentioned in this thread. I have two nominees for Beatles songs that fit in this category: Piggies from the White Album and Being For The Benefit of Mr. Kite from the Sgt. Pepper's album. Mr. Kite's lyrics are truly brilliant, the imagery is fantastic, and the tune is wonderful too. It is as good a song as any on that classic album, in my humble opinion.

Another interesting sub-category is one that I think might have been posted on this forum in the past two or three years: Beatles songs that everybody else loves, but you HATE. I have one nominee for that dubious distinction: Hey Jude. That song is SO monotonous, the na-na-na's go on and on and on for WAY too long, and even that part of the song that comes before the monotony begins doesn't particularly resonate with me. I listen often to the Beatles Channel on Sirius satellite radio, but when Hey Jude comes on, I immediately change the channel.
