(60,612 posts)But I can do a lot right handed. Not ambidextrous but taught myself.

(113,971 posts)not truly capable.
Given the asymmetrical effects of osteoarthritis as we age, it would be good if everyone tried to be more ambidextrous--even if it doesn't come naturally...

But Im left-footed which is kinda weird. I kick footballs and soccer balls with my left foot.

(6,084 posts)I do a lot of tasks with my left. I prefer my left hand for carrying items and usually grab things with my left hand 1st. Been told I hold my silverware incorrectly, apparently I'm not to dine with the Queen,..ahh...err...King....and did you know that 56% of the typing you do on a standard QWERTY keyboard falls on the fingers of the left hand?
So, although I am primarily right-handed, I am somewhat ambidextrous.

(31,904 posts)but dad was left handed... so when I learned to play golf and baseball... I would "switch hit"... and I got pretty good at it too.

(40,969 posts)My aunt was a leftie, too & she & my mom always got a corner seat at family events.
Mom had this tee-shirt:
If the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body,
then only left-handers are in their right mind.![]()

(27,834 posts)I write right handed but steer my car and use a computer mouse or touch pad left handed. Also use a potato peeler and eat left handed. I also tend to 'drift' to the left when I walk. When I was in boot camp I was the 'Port Side Recruit Petty Officer' and was a 'guide on' when we marched. The person behind me would 'pssst' when I started drifting.
My mom was left handed but the nuns tied her left hand down to force her to be right handed. She wrote right handed but there were still things she did left handed. I sometimes wonder if she 'trained' me to be right handed when I was very young.

(60,612 posts)you for all the work you do with the ferals. You, Siwsan are an angle on earth. Bless you.

(85 posts)Im left handed, but bat and swing a golf club with my right. My brother was left handed, but his school made him change to right. When I came along a couple of years later, they stopped doing it and let me be left.

(29,406 posts)When I was a kid and could do cartwheels, I always went to the left. I'm now 73, so it's been some decades since I did a cartwheel, but I can remember the sensation. When I try to imagine doing one landing on my right hand first, it makes me feel like I would fall over even thinking about it.
When I get up out of a chair, I typically take the first step forward with my left foot.
Our older son is right-handed, but left-footed. Soccer coaches loved him for that.

(76,706 posts)I was a good basketball player. One tactical advantage I had was that defenders always want to force a quick right-handed guy go to his left.
For some reason, my first instinct was always to go left. Have no idea why.
And, I always jumped off my left foot. Going to the basket & jumping off the right foot would feel very unnatural.

(76,706 posts)Obviously, I'm coordinated with my left fingers from piano & guitar.
But, I can't throw worth a darn left-handed. And, if I wrote left handed, I'm not sure it would be readable.
I'm a rightie all the way.

(39,495 posts)I recently got tendidnitus in my left elbow. Very, very painful to lift anything. I always thought my right hand did everything and my left kinda helped. It's amazing how much the left arm does in every day things.

(26,856 posts)Write, draw, paint, throw, catch, use a knife (dinnerware, or exacto), bat, play guitar badly 😄 , crochet, minor sewing, sweep, use a ladle, etc with my left hand. Luckily in NYC, and possibly the time (late 1950's) no public school forced me to change. Phew!
Like, I can take down, and put things back up, and reach for etc with my right hand. Wipe a counter, but not as strongly as w my left arm/hand. Use a scissor a bit, but way better w my left, especially with precise cutting.
I actually learned to knit right handed bc it was hard to find instructions on left handed knitting when I wanted to learn.
When I was recovering from my left shoulder's ripped up rotator cuff, I tried drawing right handed. Interesting! Oh, you could tell I had Talent, but many of my medium, to longer lines were squiggly to various degrees!!! 😄 🤔 I should try again, see if there's any improvement.
I think I'm left footed, too.
So that's what this left-hander's life is like.
I think left-handeds are around 10% of the population.

(11,142 posts)But, I used to be able to bat and swing a tennis racket with either hand. I used to play guitar either way as well. (Not as good with my left hand doing the picking, but I can do it.)
