Rather impressive. Look kinda like wasps. The female paralyzes a cicada then lifts it up (a seemingly incredible feat), flys to her freshly dug hole in the ground and stuffs the cicada in to feed the kids. The local county extension agent told me they won’t bother humans if humans don’t bother them. Let nature take its course. Fascinating.

I know the original story was based on a wasp that does this to caterpillars.

Is a freaking genius. I was mesmerized at his explanation. And yes it did sound like a plot from a damned good movie.

“As cicadas are emerging, copperheads may congregate in numbers to take advantage of the relatively easy meal of nymph cicadas emerging from the soil and climbing up the trees to shed their skins and morph into adults,” Hall said. Copperheads are most active at dusk this time of year, hoping to beat the sweltering daytime heat like the rest of us. This also corresponds to the time that cicada nymphs often emerge to go through metamorphosis (though some do this during daytime).

I don't mind the sound, except when they sing from my screen window.

If I could just keep my dog from eating them ...
