(72,661 posts)Ive seen her four times in concert. Three times with Blonde and once as a solo act.
Just an incredibly powerful, raging, strong force of nature, and a gifted performer. Unshakably dedicated to progressive causes. It was a rare performance between 2001 and 2008 where she didnt call out from the stage: Fuck George W. Bush and his fucking war!

(1,438 posts)was on Deirdre O'Donoghue's radio show "Snap" on KCRW in Santa Monica in 1986, just after the first album was issued. She played "Dance Along the Edge." I've loved that song and the band (and their solo and other works) ever since. I've been able to see them a few times in various places, but the last time was in 2001 in Honolulu (I think it was World Café). They were so good they absolutely ripped up that room. Johnette was still gorgeous, as I presume she still is. I'm not, nor have I ever been, so nothing to be done there.

(72,661 posts)We were out in the field on a maneuver exercise. We were between two of the bigger training operations of the exercise, and had little to do but pull boring guard shifts at night. One night, I came off my guard shift, and one of my best buddies came up to me and handed me the cassette of Blonde's "Bloodletting" which had just been released not long before. He said "You've GOT to listen to this!"
Instead of hitting the rack to get some sleep, I dug out my Walkman (remember those?), and listened to the whole thing from beginning to end. In order not to disturb the guys trying to sleep, with that tinny side-tone a Walkman made, I wandered around outside. It was (you should excuse the expression) a dark and stormy night. No rain, but plenty of thunder and lightning; a perfect atmosphere for a first listen to that dark, spooky, hard-rocking album.
I'll never forget the experience.

(2,563 posts)Linda Ronstadt could sing anything. She could sing opera. And did. She performed in The Pirates of Penzance and sang some of it when she was a musical guest on Saturday Night Live. She also sang the part of Violetta in Verdi's La Traviata -- I think. Anyway, that woman had an incredible voice. I'm speaking of her in the past tense and I want to make it clear that she's not dead, but her voice is gone and she can't sing any more. Except in her mind, to herself.
Honorable Mention: Karen Carpenter.

(15,675 posts)One of my majors was Spanish and the summer between my freshman and sophmore year in 92, I felt like I should go buy some Latin music. There was slim pickings at Camelot in the mall, and I knew nothing about any of the artists, but I found a cassette of Selena's "Entre a Mi Mundo," and being the typical late teen dude, I thought, "Well, at least she's very pretty." Played the hell out of that cassette, and then Mom's cable package got updated to have Telemundo, and I realized that I had become one of the few gringo fans north of Texas (Kansas) of the fastest-rising Tejano superstar in history. I eventually got all of her CDs, including a few before she had hit it big.

(1,410 posts)Karen Carpenter had one of the best voices ever. I remember back in the early 70s, I was at my friend's house and we were listening to her and her father comment on how great she was. He was a musician who got a job offer from Glenn Miller but before he could join the band he got drafted for WWII.
Anne Murray is one I can listen to all day. She did mainly country and standard love songs.
