So, I guess I won't be getting a annual bday visit from my cousin who I thought was my best friend. I thought wed go on trips together in retirement. Had lots of adventures together.
I asked her if I became homeless, could I count on her for (temp) help. I didn't get a yes. I told her I was considering making myself homeless by going to a shelter and just got "yeah". She's been increasingly rude and impatient with me the last few years.
Today is one nof the worst days ever. And my beloved psychiatrist is retiring.

(15,772 posts)See, I've worked ten yrs with society's forgotten. Shelters are Hell, esp for women.
She works in a university offices with Ph.D coworkers and not with homeless.
A bit ivory tower. And, many were homeless due to lack of money. Its a thing

(211 posts)Here is a Reddit thread that you might find helpful... About what you should do within the first few days if you end up homeless.
https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/xu3sf3/what_do_you_do_within_first_2472_hours_of_being/
I've had to live out of my car before, and it's a real challenge. From my own experience, I would say the first thing that you should do is make arrangements to have a place to bathe and take care of basic hygiene needs. I was able to find a sympathetic local gym owner who let me shower and shave there for a very small amount of money per month. Don't bother with the big chains unless those are your only option, they will want you to pay full price for a membership, and will also usually want a 6 month or year long commitment. Truck stops have showers too, they are expensive, but I know people who have gotten by doing that.
Keep a supply of wet wipes with you too, if you're forced to use public restrooms, they go a long way toward making you feel not as grimy. Try to stay well-groomed, because if you don't, people from every walk of life will be much less willing to help you as they will assume that you are a person with drug or alcohol addiction issues.
Make sure that you have all of your documents with you, like it says in the Reddit thread. Getting copies of a social security card or a birth certificate is nearly impossible if you don't have a fixed address, and a lot of social service organizations will need those documents in order to be able to process you into their systems.
I really am sorry that you're facing being homeless, it's a rough situation to find oneself in... and for what it's worth, happy birthday as well.
