(19,382 posts)We had gust of 65 mile an hour wind. We ate a late dinner on the lanai and watched the hurricane. Obviously, I know that was a privilege since many were in an extremely bad position.

(19,382 posts)regards to hurricanes. Irma was the worst one I experienced. The eye was 10 miles from the house even though smack dab in the middle of the state. I have PTSD over her.
kozar
(3,312 posts)I estimate, we were about 60 miles from eye.of this one, unless, I'm gonna go " Forest Gump" , and climb on a mast,, that's close enough for me.

(4,656 posts)Born in California. Lived there and in several states (Arizona, New Mexico, Florida, California again, Hawaii, then Altoona PA for about a year, then back to California)
My favorites: Hawaii and California. Florida was just the summers visiting my grandparents, so that was nice, but I was very young. When I was in Altoona, I worked in State College (at AccuWeather). I was there for a boyfriend that I ended up giving back to his parents. (he wasn't quite adulting correctly just yet)
I was never happier to be driving across the Golden Gate after Altoona. I literally had tears of joy. I drove across the country by myself (with my kitty - I don't like living in the snow! Or driving a rear-wheeled vehicle in it.)
Thanks for giving me a chance to revisit memory lane.

(4,656 posts)Interestingly, of a company of over 400 people, there was only 1 person of Indian (the country) heritage, and one black person. I grew up in the cradle of diversity (San Francisco Bay Area, and then the melting pot in Hawaii). Another reason I was glad to get back to the west coast. It just seemed weird to me to see only white people everywhere.

(33,344 posts)but my parents were from California and he was transferred to NY office after WW II. He had a deferment due to the type of work he did in the industrial chemical field. When he retired in 1965, we all moved (back) to California.
My second husband and I did not want to raise kids in Los Angeles ( second marriage for us both and no kids for either of us in first marriages) and that's what started our trek across country to Missouri to Nebraska to North Carolina.
My husband died in 2018, but both my sons live within 20 minutes of where I live now. No more moves for me, I hope!
