I started piano just before I turned 5. Teacher used the Schirmer method books.
When I was 10, I discovered jazz piano, and my dad found me a jazz coach who I was with until I was 15 or 16.
I taught myself guitar at 19, but I understood enough about music that the new instrument was all about technique. I didn't need a teacher, just the desire to get better.
I was talking about no music classes in school. Not even something like music appreciation was offered in the schools I attended. No idea why.

.....had some connection to why I went into Architecture. I loved drafting and was very good at it, if I do say so myself. When computer aided drafting (CAD) took over, further compounding my love-loss with the profession over unimaginative and pecunious clients. Kepp it up with the great survey questions.

I went on to study Geochemistry in college, and to be employed with that knowledge most of my adult life. I also loved Art, particularly painting. I still paint in watercolor and acrylics to this day, but it's more of a hobby than a profession. Great topic, Deb!

95. Art Classes. History. Student Demonstrations.

Definitely Social Studies/History depending on the teacher. Dragged through the Economics semester. Ugggh.

Sometimes English was ok to ineresting. I had trouble talking about basic themes, hidden themes etc in literture. Blargh. (Probably better at it in the last decade or so)

Except for Geometry I "crawled" through the math classes. Avoided the science classes. I actually like some sciences alot, but not chemistry, basic physics. Though I find chemistry more interesting in part few decades. Hmmm..."Chemistry for Dummies"?
Now if we'd had Astronamy I might have been willing to learn some basic chemistry & phsyics! Probably same w some Earth Sciences.

Now on to Art Classes. Oil Painting, Graphic Design (which included illustration, and a book making assignment), Sculpture (did we have that?), not so much liking life drawing, Water colors, Ceramics.

I went on to Art College: graphic design, and assemblage Sculptures mostly. I loved painting, too. I learned paste ups & mechanicals in Adult Ed through other Art Colleges just post college, or also in summer in between Junior and Senior year in College.
I did paste ups & mechanicals, graphic design, some illustration professionally for 6ish yrs . Plus some community volunteer stuff using these skilks after regular work, weekends.

As for 😄 "Student Demonstrations" '68 - '70...
At the time our then "HS of Music & Art" (NYC) was situated between City College's north, and south campus. We'd watch the Anti-Vietnam War demos they were doing out our windows. Though one time the college students got in, ran through our hallways, banging on our class room doors yelling "Join Us!".
There were Black Power demos. Did we have any student strikes, don't remember.

I used to say "It's Spring: student demonstration time!".

Being a Creative HS we were allowed to dress almost always the way we wanted to. Fun!

And didn't understand why until I went after a math degree in college in 2002. I started taking classes where all you did was proofs and I was totally in my element. In fact, in the 1980's I almost flunked calculus when I got my engineering degree and one of the reasons I got the math degree was for a do-over after 3 semesters, I was still bad at calculus. But I had to take an Analysis class which is all proofs of calculus... and I aced it.

This reminds me of my dream of going back to college and getting a math degree. Never too late... I think this is now officially back on my bucket list.

I hated High School. I stopped going. Went and got my GED when I was 20. Let’s see, went to a semester of Catholic High school, hated it, regular high school, was indifferent to it, and a couple of alternative high schools, which I kind of liked.

I was a mathalete and an artist. I saw drafting as an extention of each. Went to college on art scholarship. And first full time job was as a draftsperson. That was before Autocad programs and we had to do the math.

I liked science too. And home Ec. Sewed most of my own clothes until my first job. Mostly mod style. And outfits like Cher's.

Last edited Tue Nov 5, 2024, 07:53 PM - Edit history (1)

Mr Bechtel was a funny, wiry, wry fomer-dog-handler who survived Vietnam who accepted additions to his plant collection in lieu of demerits.
He told us the truth, made history exciting, and took an interest in each one of us. He’d give a conspiratorial nod before he’d tell us some reality (like about being a dog handler in Vietnam) and he’d mutter something like ‘that’s about as far as i can go and keep my job’ at our catholic high school.
He seemed puzzled that I chose engineering but suggested i take a look at LeHigh.
I did not normally like history (usually nothing but dates and wars, wasn’t it then?), but I loved his class, and his words have stuck clearly in my mind for 45 years. I suspect the interest in history that developed later had its origins there.
