(114,760 posts)Sorry to be the bearer of cyber warnings - this is not posted to offend, but to enlighten.
https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-56680790
The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) said 15% of the population used pets' names, 14% use a family member's name, and 13% pick a notable date.
And 6% of people are still using "password" as all - or a part - of their password.
The NCSC urged people to choose random words that cannot be guessed instead.
Other problematic passwords included a sports team the user supported (6%), a string of numbers such as "123456" (6%), or a favourite TV show (5%).
Ocelot II
(131,214 posts)And I'm not about to use "idontwanttolookatyourbutthole" as a password, especially since they usually want numbers and characters and uppercase letters as well. So it would have to be something like "IdontWanttolookatyourButthole@834" which would be tough to guess but kind of a PITA to work with.
Dear_Prudence
(1,194 posts)Had a posting by our security folks. It was a cartoon of someone complaining that their password had been compromised, so now they would have to rename their pet.
debm55
(61,671 posts)Ocelot II
(131,214 posts)I doubt anybody is sifting DU for passwords, and they aren't identified by real name anyhow. I was joking about how I don't use my cat's name as a password, not about posting it here. It's a good reminder not to use a pet name, a child's name or a birthday as a password, though.

(9,222 posts)They're shelter cats, and came pre-named. Houdini is a real rascal, and gets into everything. S'mores is more refined, and a bit aloof.
But, they love to run around and rough house with each other. I guess months of cage living gave them a strong appreciation of being free to roam all around our 2-story house.
I hope our plants survive.

(20,989 posts)Scotch was found a couple years ago at an intersection in Youngstown after the smoke cleared from a shooting. My buddy who works at ODOT was sweeping up there when a cop told him this orange kitten was sitting there in the street. He took him home and made me adopt him.
He still has a habit of biting and scratching me and he avoids human contact, but I love him. At first I named him Sparky, but he quit chewing on electrical cords. Now he's named Scotch because of his color and that sometimes he drives me to drink.
Here he is in the OSP car shortly before release following questioning. He didn't see nothin'.

(2,560 posts)He was born in May 2012. I named him Fred for no particular reason; he just looks like a Fred to me.
His mom was Rose. I named her that because she was really pretty, but she had thorns. Rose got sick and I had to have her put down about three and a half years ago.
Before Rose and Fred was Riley. I named him that because of one day when I walked by where he was snoozing on the corner of a desk and I suddenly had the thought, Hey, this guy has people feeding him, opening doors for him, giving him affection, he's got a free meal ticket for life, he's living the life of Riley, so he must be ... Riley! (I used to watch that old TV show when I was a kid in the late 1950s.)
Fred, Rose and Riley were the perfect names for those three cats. Those names just fit them all to a T.

The one near our house is nearly 5 acres of fenced in fun! Actually, 2 five acres areas, and a 3 acres plot for digs 35# & under.
It's in a huge forest preserve, and it's only 5 or so minutes from the house. So, he gets out there twice most days.
He's a lucky puppy, in that he came into the home well after I retired, so I've got lots of free time.

and Bubba is our dog - he already had that name when we got him - he's a rescue dog...
Pesh used to be Precious and was called Presh for short so it was easy to change his name to Peshwari and call him Pesh for short or Peshie...
Peshie is almost 20 years old...
Edited to add:
Peshie is a half house cat and half mountain wild cat grey and white and striped and speckled and is absolutely beautiful and adorable (mountain wild cats came over here from Scotland in the 1700's or there-abouts) he used to be really big he was over three feet long but he has shrunk in his old age he also has a W on his head for Wisconsin...
Bubba is a half Amstaff (he has a huge chest) and half big baby Black Lab - his ears are not floppy but instead short and pointy (he is very alert) and he's very smart...
Both of them know how to speak English (I taught them how)...
One time Peshie built a house out of a box and he tore out window spaces in it with his claws and also a door and then went in and peeked out at us...
One time Bubba took all his 50 or so rawhide bones out of his basket and lined them all up in a long row an the floor and I'm not sure but maybe he was counting them...
We have big howl and meow fests fairly regularly but we've toned it down a bit over the years thankfully we don't have very many real close neighbors there are a lot of businesses around us...
They tell us how much they love us over and over again every day...

(27 posts)Olive, Gray Tabby - showed up in our shed at 4 months old when her mom disappeared (I was feeding her). Still slightly feral and inside only. Very hard to get her to the vet because we can't pick her up so we have to ambush her. 7 yrs. old.
Ziggy, Russian Blue mix - stray I was feeding but he kept getting into fights. I decided to bring him into the fold when he showed up with one eye swollen shut. Wild child. Talks a lot. Probably 5 yrs. old.
I have to mention the dearly departed Dexter that we lost to cancer at age 14 in September. Brown Bulls-eye Tabby. He was the undisputed leader of the gang and all cats loved him. We miss him terribly. Tyger still mourns for him too.
Also Professor Oak, I think he was classified as a color point tabby, my daughter's cat she had to leave with us when she moved to California. Passed away at age 11 from CKD. He was difficult but he and I bonded and I still miss him. I think Dexter was the only cat he ever made friends with.

(23,757 posts)1. Squeaker so named because he made a squeaky sound when he tried to meow as a kitten
Sometimes we call him Tubbo or Fatso - he is overweight
2. Missy - She and Squeaker have the same mother and look like twins. Her named just evolved
3. Eleanor - the Failed Foster. She has hated being touched by humans and won't get close to us. Because we thought she was a male, we named her Elliot Ness because she was "untouchable". WHen she went to be neutered, it turned out to be a spay instead. Thus Eleanor. She is such a loner, I often sing "Eleanor Rigby" substituting kitty for Rigby. Sometimes we call her Elly Belly.
Ellie fell head over heels for CatZilla, one of our Senior cats, and would snuggle with him all day. She missed him for a long time.

As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
