Back in the day such software had some value, but newer operating systems do a good job of keeping everything optimal.

It has nothing to do with him any more. However it's products are notoriously shitty.

I like this one for my PCs...

https://www.glarysoft.com

and I am using this one for my Mac...

https://www.ccleaner.com

However, no cleaner/optimizer will help if one does not clean and optimize everything. If you cannot allow the program to, say, erase all browser history, which includes all of those saved passwords that allow one to just click on in, as opposed to having to re-enter the information after every cleaning, it won't help you to have one. When I run mine, it erases everything it can. The temp files, all the cookies, histories, etc. It also optimizes the hard drive by stacking fragments better to free up space. The thing is, nowadays there is more and more crap being dumped into your machines whenever you go to certain sites or when you click on most advertised links. It is nice to have something that can remove most of it without having to learn how to do it all manually. But, it needs to be done once in a while.

(As always, feel free to do your own research on either or both of the links I provided. Most of the other 'free' versions of such programs are so ad-heavy as to be almost dangerous to use, and will slow your machine even as it is supposed to be helping.)
