I'm learning that if I phrase my search in either obscure slang, or precise terms, often AI doesn't chime in. Guess my new hobby is beat the bot.

(81,738 posts)I've also read adding an f bomb keeps ai from appearing. Maybe once, but not anymore. 🤬

Ty for suggesting!

(15,280 posts)I entered : -ai python polygon
No ai in the response
Then I entered: python polygon
The first response had ai generated code, followed by other responses.

(131,252 posts)If you just ask Google, Is there life on Mars, you'll get a paragraph of AI slop. If you query, Is there life on Mars -AI, it responds with the first answer from the web site space.com.

(2,432 posts)I use DuckDuckGo, which doesn't track your searches, and prevents tracking by third parties etc. It allows a lot of customizing. (For instance, I don't have to view ads on sites, for the most part, which sinplifies my visual field. Also, no popups!) Free download for all operating systems.
I went to my browser settings (looks like a little gear), and under "advanced," there were the AI options, for chat and search results. I turned off "chat" (which is I think asking search questions conversationally), and turned off all AI input into my search results.
Of course, DuckDuckGo isn't trying to train or market an AI system. They don't need to glom anything off my searches. Other browsers might have similar ways to either not show any AI-generated results at all, or ideally, to keep the AI from being employed in any way in your searches. If you don't see the latter option, I suggest voting with your fingers, and getting a different browser to set as your default. You can still keep non-default browsers in case you need them.

(23,459 posts)The ones I read last year were generalized statements that didn't enrich me
Today, I was searching for information about how long it takes paper to fox. I got the most help from Wikipedia, but I noticed several hits were about making origami paper foxes. Lol
Anyway, I've been discouraged with the lack of depth, and I'm glad I posted. The tips will be helpful. Thank you.

(11,040 posts)Ask for a deeper search or tell Groc the source of your info. What I like is that it will also scan research papers.
When asking questions about my small down - an article by my best friend was in references.

(9,372 posts)I've been using mostly DuckDuckGo for a couple of years now. It will (now) ask you if you want to try AI, but you don't have to, or even have to look at a suggestion. That I can live with.

(77,306 posts)...that the AI response is a direct lift from Wikipedia.
Read the AI, then click Wiki. The highlighted section is nearly verbatim what the AI spit out.
It happens a lot!
It's not so much intelligent, just really fast at looking things up.
