In the 60s, Dad brought a ‘56 Pontiac 2 door as a second car. Big V8. Thing had thick steel panels. You could bang it with your fist and it was like hitting a tank!

1. Cars were huge back then. My buddy had an old DeSoto that one could easily put a large sofa in the back seat.

I had a 4-door 57 Ford that was almost as big. It's probably still in use in Cuba.

Shortly after that, I got my first VW and have driven small cars ever since.

2. Tune up with new plugs ever 12,000 miles. 10 miles to a gallon, I remember those days.

And in general you were being advised to 'trade in' anything that was pushing 60 thousand. Tires back then good for .. ? (I try to point out to the nostalgics - even while having a streak myself - that a lot of things really are made better today, than what we were dealing with .. )

my most 'tankish' ride was probably a 62 Chrysler - stylish and petite - - not real great on gas - - but hellish in a demo derby contest!

6. Critical engine parts are now able to be machined much more precisely.

I recall it vaguely.

5. Cars from the 50s and 60s

had real character and uniqueness. You could easily tell the various makes at a glance. What an automotive era it was. Great cars.
