Soon after making the movie, the boy who played David retired from acting, at age 14.

I was five when I first watched it on the TV at my best friend's house. I didn't know it at the time but he was dying from a brain tumor and that's why we had to play indoors. It scared the bejeezus out of us, which was, of course, great fun. It's a terrific film in is own right and I think it was the first sci-fi movie to play on the Cold War paranoia of distrusting those around you, six years before Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

I was 7 or 8, and the Martian leader -- just a head with arms that looked like tree branches -- scared the hell out of me.
