When you die, what do you figure will be the most defining thing about your life?

What will people remember about you, first and foremost?

I'm just an ordinary Joe, but I like to make people laugh. If most people said, "He had a good sense of humor," that would be enough for me.

You?

1) Like you, I can get a roomful of people laughing so hard that they almost choke. I'm not that way on DU obviously. but I can do it in real life. I'm proud of this because I used to be shy and retiring. I came out of my shell. I hope to be remembered with a smile and a laugh.

2) I've had several professionals call me a true craftsman, with complete sincerity. This is what I am most proud of.

3) My spouse says they should put on my tombstone "He was generous, always helped others, and he got things done".

I'm in a bad state of mind right now, and it helped me to type this out.

I'm as ordinary as they come, and sometimes we don't see our good traits.

Thanks for this OP!

Glad you're giving yourself credit for all three items you listed. I think #3 is the mark of a truly good person.

I made a lot of art. Got much of it out into the world.
Wrote several books that a couple of people read and a couple probably burned.
I tried to be an authentic human.
I tried.

What's the most defining thing about it now? What's your friends' immediiate reaction when they think of you?

It'll be the same when you're gone, and it'll depend on the individual.

I have three grown stepchildren who have ten kids between them. There is no biological relationship between them and me in any way. But I'm proud to say all ten consider me their favorite grandfather. I'm happy if that's my legacy.

We stopped at a very old cemetery and saw a headstone that simply read "He done what he could".

I have remembered that for decades. I hope that would have made the dear man proud.

For me kindness can cover a lot of ground in how you live your life; small scale, person to person, or bigger scale. I'd never call my self sn activist, but a semi activist, yeah.

I want to be remembered at least by a few, and there's some stuff on the internet for all the hard work, and fun in my art pursuits. And I love to laugh, and have fun with my peeps, and strangers. It balances out the serious stuff I think about, and effect change.

Might add I like to learn things- so that's sort of serious depending, and interesting.

My love of German Shepherds. Trying to share what I learned about history and politics from my professors, so maybe others could have their eyes opened like mine were. To point out the ways things went horribly wrong in the past as to not repeat the same mistakes. Also to teach the best thing is to make policy that aids people not harms them, because in the long run, its more beneficial to all of a society.
