Got it for my grandson.
He asked why they were wearing funny shoes & were not wearing sneakers!

(14,624 posts)then we moved, and that school system used Alice and Jerry, which I liked a whole lot better.
Question: does anyone remember the Martin and Judy storybooks? I had those before I started school. My mom used to read them to me and then when I started reading I read them for myself and also to my younger brothers.

(18,163 posts)Everything was "by and by" with Alice and Jerry, and I had never heard anyone say that.
Edited to correct "bye" to "by." I still haven't heard it in real life.

(267 posts)I went to a parochial (Catholic) school. I learned about Dick, Jane & Sally later, but I've never heard of Jerry & Alice before now.

(27,348 posts)But I have a pretty distinct memory of seeing the Dick and, Jane, and Spot books on the? school, or regular library shelves.

(596 posts)to read when I was 4. Before she married my grandpa, she was a first grade teacher. When I started school in 1st grade, I was started in Dick and Jane, but was soon switched to Alice and Jerry Down the River Road. Thanks for the fun post evoking long ago memories 😊

(102 posts)In kindergarten we worked on pre-reading skills--lots of letter recognition and phonics. Then in first grade we began to learn actual decoding using the Janet & Mark readers. I just looked them up; the series was first published in January of 1966 and I started first grade in Los Angeles County in September 1966.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
