(2,964 posts)I quit about 30 years ago and thankfully have not missed it. Don't know how anyone affords it now - hope you can get past the temporary temptation

(20,442 posts)I smoked for 53 years. Notice that I didn't say "I quit smoking". I could start again any time. I just know that this mental desire (not physical anymore) always passes quickly.

(43,094 posts)After 20 years, especially at 75, that jolt of nicotine could be too much for your heart. Kinda like putting a supercharger on a stock engine with 100,000 miles on it without making the necessary modifications.
It's pretty rare, but it's been known to happen.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
