3. When you go to Wal-Mart

Pick up a spice mix called Spike and mix the saffron in with that and make some roasted potatoes with it. That's my favorite way of using it. I also liked it in cream of chicken soup. Don't use a lot of it, just one or two threads ( stigmas) smashed with a mortar and pestle.

The original Spike years ago used to have saffron in it. When they stopped to cut costs ( thinking no one would miss it) I got the bulbs and grew my own because it was the saffron in the mix that made it so good.

5. I was being tongue-in-cheek about

picking up saffron at Wal-Mart because I was sure they wouldn't carry it. The Wal-Mart I go to is very proletarian. But there are better grocery stores around here. I'll check with them. Thanks for the idea!

As I understand it, the mines withhold a lot of them to keep them overly inflated.

Probably the same thing here. If people will pay that much, why flood the market and remove the profits?
