(43,094 posts)I doubt Janis* would be thought to have a great voice by the typical standards. The thing about her was she sang her guts out on every song, and everybody listening to her felt that in theirs.

and oddly remembered this comment.
Janis was truly amazing, "but" she also did basically everything "wrong" (quotes important) she sang with a tight throat, breathed harder than I do when I'm running sprints, her tone was as rough as 80-grit sandpaper, and she just laughed and slugged some Southern Comfort if you ever talked about her "pitch". She was a NASCAR driver doing a burnout at the very start of a race, doing literally EVERYTHING wrong
and she was one of the most amazing modern singers for it.

I listened to her album, Back to Black, constantly when it came out in 2006. I can't believe it's been almost 20 years....
