What are your pet peeves

I’m sure everyone has some pet peeve. I have a couple but my biggest pet peeve are drivers who “dive bomb” for the exit. These are people on the freeway who cut across one or more lanes in front of other cars at high speeds to get onto an exit at the last seconds instead of planning their exit earlier.

What are some of your pet peeves.

One of mine is people who don't understand the difference between then and than. Also inverting sell and sale. Well OK, that's two. Which reminds me, to, too, and two. So I guess that's three. And one that's ubiquitous here on DU: misuse of apostrophes. Oops, that's four.

But very few are likely to get me killed, so I'm going to second your dive bombing the exit pet peeve.

And stopping for no reason on on or off ramps. I was exiting I35 in Dallas when a vehicle two cars up suddenly stopped for no reason. I stopped in time as did the car behind me. But a few cars back we heard a horrible crash. My sister was with me, we are both registered nurses so we looped back. By the time we got there police were on the scene. We passed the vehicle that caused the accident, they had no clue what had happened. They were from Indiana. I understand that the DFW Metroplex has more people than your whole state, but if you can't handle the traffic just stick to the side roads.

When you're behind a driver who's going really slowly when you're about to merge onto the freeway. You have to merge into 65mph traffic and they completely screw you over.

When you're merging onto a freeway and there are cars behind you on the entrance ramp, some joker behind you crosses over the solid line into the lane you're merging into and speeds up causing you to hit the breaks.

and during the summer we get a lot of tourists. I like to take walks along the street adjacent to the beach or downtown and they're usually busy. I'd get caught behind a family of four who have to walk four abreast, taking up the entire sidewalk, oblivious to those behind or in front of them. The thing I've noticed, especially among young people, is they'll walk four abreast and you can tell the pecking order of the group because the ones on the outside are not the leaders of the group.

I'll admit, I've been to places as a tourist but I'm mindful of my surroundings. I've been with groups and we would walk two abreast because we out of consideration for others.

When three or four people walk side-by-side, those low on the pecking order don't want to give up their outside position (third and fourth) and walk behind the other two.

That bill is the FRONT of that cap, not the back!

Just one more: People who say "Me and him went to the store." Do they say "Me went to the store."? or "Him went to the store."? That is like fingernails screeching across chalkboard to me. PLEASE, people, say it correctly. "He and I went to the store."

I have quite a few grammar pet peeves. I was a newspaper copyeditor for 45 years. This one probably is the one that REALLY makes my skin crawl, though.

…I’m afraid they’ll crack. If people do it right in the singular, why can’t they do it right in the plural.

Even though I spent 45 years as a pediatric nurse practitioner, I’ve often wondered if I were an English teacher or editor in a previous life. I’m definitely a grammar, spelling, and usage nerd in this one.

They post “We’re screwed.” Or they attribute powers to trump that he does not have.

I’m not saying one has to be happy and positive all the time, but saying such negative things doesn’t give the discussion anywhere to go. These people want to use DU as a therapy session and forget its purpose as a discussion forum. Selfish.

Furthermore, there is the matter of emotional contagion. Name a battle that was won with low morale. We are going to win this thing, but people like this are a drag on our momentum.

I know the cons use that term to "own the libs," and also to mark themselves as a member of their tribe. What really annoys me, though, is when I see it written that way in serious news articles or reports (when they're not quoting someone), as if that's the actual name of the party.

WTF? Is this any way to sell a book, by calling people idiots or dummies just because they haven't become subject experts yet? Admittedly there are many things I don't know, but that doesn't mean I'm an idiot or dummy. GFY, keep your book. I'll not be purchasing anything so insulting.
