Funny thing I had never heard the original until about five years ago and I was born in the 60's! My wife played it for me and she couldn't believe I had never heard it.
Here's another version I really love.
Thanks, TwilightGardener!
Glorfindel

(28,552 posts)... expecting much from a Cocteau Twins cover since they are one of my top 3 favorites of all time and there is nothing and I mean nothing else like them - but you are right, not bad, not bad at all!

(3,134 posts)and this is their best imo. The Cocteau Twins really are so very unique. I love their music.

(692 posts)I go through times when I can't stand Country music and then other times, I love it! (21,046 posts)basically, everything on The Beatles' Second Album not by Lennon/McCartney:

Also: Bad Boy, Dizzy Miss Lizzy, Kansas City/Hey,Hey,Hey,Hey, Words of Love, If Not For You, Matchbox, Act Naturally.
Mama Cass: Dream a Little Dream of Me
The Who: Young Man blues, Summertime Blues, Roadrunner.
Cream: Down at the Crossroads
Emerson, Lake &Palmer: The Great Gate of Kiev from Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky

(3,134 posts)I love this version. TFF are kind of a tough band to cover imo as many of the covers I've heard don't have the same emotional weight as the originals but not this one.
Here's a couple of other good TFF covers.
He's one I think that's better than the original, by Disturbed
And this one's kind of a cheat because it's not technically not a cover, just lead vocals by the wonderful Oleta Adams.

(1,569 posts)No surprise then that I like most of the gimme gimme's punk covers, Goldfinger is great too. More surprising I suppose is that I can listen to Nouvelle Vogue do slowed down, jazzy, torch-singer versions of some great 80s songs. My favorite Nouvelle Vague covers are "Dance with me" (great video), "killing moon", and the hilarious cover of the Dead Kennedy's "Too Drunk to Fuck"

(322 posts)But the question is, who was covering whom? Smoky Robinson recorded it first, then Marvin Gaye, but neither was released by Motown. Then Gladys Knight recorded it, it was released, and it was a hit. But then Marvin Gaye's version was finally released, and it became the classic version of them all. Then CCR did a cover, and it was fine, too. Gladys Knight, Marvin Gaye, CCR--all have great versions of "Grapevine," with Marvin Gaye's being the best.
