Here it is,

I also dig this somber version of it by The Dø. These guys are a great French/Finnish band, with a lot of stuff worth checking out. I highly recommend them.

Thanks for sharing with me, Myrina!

Willie Nelson's cover of Townes Van Zandts' Pancho & Lefty, and these live covers of "Somebody To Love" and "Keep On Rockin' In the Free World, some obscure jams recorded by some group of unknown itinerant musicians.

I am an embarrassingly rabid fan of his and every time I hear a new arrangement of one of his songs, it is my favorite, until I hear the original again. His alternate versions from studio sessions are great songs in their own rights.

No surprise then that I like most of the gimme gimme's punk covers, Goldfinger is great too. More surprising I suppose is that I can listen to Nouvelle Vogue do slowed down, jazzy, torch-singer versions of some great 80s songs. My favorite Nouvelle Vague covers are "Dance with me" (great video), "killing moon", and the hilarious cover of the Dead Kennedy's "Too Drunk to Fuck"

But the question is, who was covering whom? Smoky Robinson recorded it first, then Marvin Gaye, but neither was released by Motown. Then Gladys Knight recorded it, it was released, and it was a hit. But then Marvin Gaye's version was finally released, and it became the classic version of them all. Then CCR did a cover, and it was fine, too. Gladys Knight, Marvin Gaye, CCR--all have great versions of "Grapevine," with Marvin Gaye's being the best.
