(5,112 posts)The "agony of defeat skier" refers to Vinko Bogataj, a Slovenian ski jumper whose dramatic crash during a 1970 competition became the iconic visual for the phrase "the agony of defeat" on ABC's Wide World of Sports. While Bogataj was unaware of his accidental fame for decades, he later attended anniversaries of the show and became an unlikely American icon. He sustained injuries, including a broken ankle and a concussion, but was able to continue his life and has since become an accomplished painter.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
