Red-tailed Hawk - Central Park, NYC

A young Red-tailed Hawk swooped low past me and settled on a nearby branch this morning. And I captured it in beautiful light!

My short story relating to this:

Many years ago, I was driving on a country road where I saw a big bird on the shoulder, not moving. Upon closer inspection it was a red-tailed hawk. One of her wings was not moving, so I grabbed a blanket from the car, gently placed it over her and drove her to the closest vet clinic.

The vet much to my relief said he would evaluate her and I was to come by the next day.

The next day when I looked in on her the vet said she had a minor wing injury and she was probably in shock when I found her. He said he would feed and take care of her for a few days. A week goes by and he said her release would be the next day! Her eyes were bright and she was ready!

Releasing her was such a beautiful thing! I will never forget the kindness of the vet and I will always cherish this memory.

My sis lives at the top of Manhattan by the big park. There was a red-tail hawk hanging out there that year. It perched on her fire escape, and she got a photo. Very cool.

A red tallied hawk lived up in an old tall ponderosa pine on my property. She had a huge baby in a nest.

When we would hike the property, she would try to chase us out by swooping over our heads. When we started building- she left.

Usually have lots of ravens out here but they seemed to have moved on a month ago which is unusual.

Nice photo!!
