I've so far rarely needed a cane (sprained ankles, temporary extra leg pain) luckily all resolved...
I'm sitting in our lobby so will watch the vid back upstairs... but...
I always used the cane on the injured/painful side. Taking some of the weight off the affected leg, as I step on to the pavement, etc, as you have said, UTUSN.
