Would you want to live in a world where your thoughts and speech are punishable by death? Well, this very grim prospect is the reality of millions of people living in countries with blasphemy laws. Blasphemy refers to speech that insults or disagrees with a religion and its teachings. Since 2009, September 30 is marked by the Center of Inquiry as International Blasphemy Rights Day to raise awareness for the cruel blasphemy laws practiced in over 69 countries.

(29,887 posts)I dont want to end up hanging on a wall because I supported the conclave of 1615 over the one in 1727. When the subject comes up at work or elsewhere, my standard reply goes thusly:
There are three things I dont discuss at work / in a social setting / etc.:
1. Politics
2. Religion
3. The torture chamber in my basement where I mutilated all those people
4. Better make that FOUR things
Cue nervous laughter, followed by change of subject.

On September 30, Orange Shirt Day promotes awareness about the Indian residential school system still impacting Native American communities in the United States and Canada. Known as National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the day honors the children forced into Indian boarding schools. In addition, the day also remembers those who never returned home.
Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
