In celebration of #WorldKangarooDay 🦘, we present the first scientific description of "The Great Kanguroo, Macropus giganteus", from Shaw's The Naturalist's Miscellany (1790), which begins "the Kanguroo is a very anomalous and extraordinary quadruped". doi.org/10.5962/p.31... 🧪 📖 🌏 #ILoveBHL

Happy #WorldKangarooDay!
There are around 70 species of hopping #marsupial in Australia & New Guinea, filling a whole host of niches, in every terrestrial habitat.🦘
This is one of the smaller ones: Tasmanian pademelons are adorable forest #wallabies, readily spotted across #Tasmania.

Not quite a kangaroo:

Quokka (Setonix brachyurus): 56cm (21in). This Australian mammal is a small macropod about the size of a domestic cat. Like other marsupials in the macropod family (such as kangaroos and wallabies), the quokka is herbivorous and mainly nocturnal. #quokka #marsupial #macropod #nature #australia

Sad:

The Wondiwoi tree #kangaroo 🦘🌿 is the most endangered kangaroo alive due to #palmoil #deforestation 🪔🌴 and hunting across their range of #WestPapua. Take action to help these wide-eyed beauties #Boycottpalmoil 👎 #Boycott4Wildlife 🚫 @palmoildetect.bsky.social wp.me/pcFhgU-8yg
