My Great-Nephew arrived at about midnight

His name is Oliver. His parents are exhausted so I'm still awaiting the 'statistics'. From the photo I received, he looks very much like his dad, who was one of the most beautiful babies I've ever seen.

So I'm totally chuffed and VERY anxious for my first visit.

Mom is a 'first timer' and is very nervous so we are giving her all the time she needs to realize she NEEDS HELP!! We were all given orders to get our vaccinations up to date and we've all offered to wear masks until she gets comfortable. She joined a lot of 'first time mom' groups and is going off of their advice. She should have turned to a more experienced bunch. Unfortunately she's totally estranged from her mother and her mother in law (my sister) is dead. She has been assured that all she needs to do is call and I and/or the auntie will be there in a flash so that she can get some rest.

...and new babies. I love to teach, and new parents are eager learners because they mostly don't know anything. If I could have limited my practice to parents and young children, I would probably still be working, but electronic charting, COVID, the demand for telemedicine and teenagers did me in after 45 years.

If you can find a used copy of Dr. Mom by Dr. Marianne Neifert, get one for her. It's been around for ages, and is one of the best books about child health I know of. Dr. Neifert was a pediatrician at the U of Colorado and the mother of 5 children. When I read it, I agreed with pretty much everything in it, and I would tell parents it was rather like having a paperback copy of me at home. Very practical and down to earth, and has a section specifically on when to worry and when not to.

If only babies came with an instruction manual ….. They will figure it out.
