They did have restrictions that I could live with for the most part.

I was very sensitive and introverted and my dad would criticize me for not going out Friday and Saturday night. I needed decades of solitude and a few close friends over my life. He didn't get that. My mom would correct my language when I was challenged with words because I was dyslexic. She wanted me to speak the king's English. I needed to just feel comfortable speaking any which way. I was so quiet. Thing is my parents were quiet, sensitive, passive & vulnerable people too, so I don't know why they just wouldn't let me be me.
