The Whistleblower Protection Act of 1989 (WPA) is a federal law protecting most U.S. federal civil service employees from retaliationsuch as termination, demotion, or suspensionfor disclosing information about government illegality, waste, fraud, abuse, or danger to public health. It aimed to strengthen protections under the Civil Service Reform Act of 1978 and was signed into law on April 10, 1989.
Key aspects of the 1989 Act include:
Protected Disclosures: Covers disclosures of information that the employee reasonably believes evidences a violation of law, rule, or regulation; gross mismanagement; a gross waste of funds; an abuse of authority; or a substantial and specific danger to public health or safety.
