or so they claimed. Overdue unpaid fine, all kinds of dire consequences pending by the end of the week, etc., etc. He gave it to me to handle.
A) We've had no mail correspondence on this. That's how they communicate, not by text.
B) How the hell do they have his cell phone number?
C) The car is in my name and any ticket would be mine. (He got a real violation 2 years ago by getting caught on camera being in the wrong location as far as a stopped school bus was concerned. They issued a ticket based on the license plate, so it's on my record. I am less than thrilled about that, but it wasn't worth contesting and getting it corrected. We both have completely clean records otherwise.)
D) The phone number that texted us had a country code. I looked it up.
The Philippines. Hennepin County DMV apparently has an office in the Philippines.
Nope, don't think so. Number blocked.

(102,593 posts)Inform the DMV about this so they know there is a scam using them.
I once got a call from some scammer who was demanding that I call back to a different number with payment for some 'judgement' against me. The phone number on my screen was on digit off from the county court's. At the time I happened to be right outside the county building and offered to go in and handle it but the guy was emphatic that I not do that.
So I told him that I knew it was a scam and he could go fuck himself and ended the call. Then I got out of my car and went in to the county court clerk's office and showed them the number, told them what happened and they were pissed. I don't know what they did about it but they were thankful I informed them of the scam.
Should probably let them know.
