'Star Trek' Proposal Photo Captures Everyone Off Guard, Including Cast

An unexpected marriage proposal in front of the cast of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" made for a memory that is truly out of this world.

A "Trek" fan popped the question during a cast photo op Sunday at Austin Wizard World Con, according to actor Wil Wheaton, who played Wesley Crusher on the popular '90s sci-fi show -- and was seated to the immediate left of the bride-to-be during the proposal (she said "yes&quot .

The photo rose to the top of Reddit's front page on Nov. 7. Wheaton, an avid user of the social news site, wrote in the comments:

About 30 minutes or so into this particular session, these two people came in. The girl went to stand between Patrick [Stewart] and [Jonathan] Frakes, and the guy directed her to stand in the front, instead. All of us tried to figure out what was going on... and the guy said, 'I really love 'Star Trek,' but I love (her name) even more.' He got down on one knee, and proposed to her.

Cast member Marina Sirtis had apparently met the couple earlier in the day and given them a hard time for not yet being married. According to Wheaton, Sirtis was a little embarrassed by the proposal.

"I guess when the cast of 'Star Trek' tells you to engage, you make it so," observed one Reddit user, co-opting catch phrases from the show.

the girl feels obligated to say yes, even if she has doubts. I mean you're in that situation, or on the jumbotron, and what are you going to do? Say no? I bet a good number of them never make to the altar, though. Never a good idea to spring it on someone like that publicly.

i would think that john delancie needs the work more than patrick stewart.

maybe he had a dinner-theatre gig he couldn't get out of.

- wait for it - male and older fans of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

He voiced a very Q-like character in last season's debut episodes, went to last summer's Bronycon and was sufficiently intrigued by the fandom to do a feature-length film about the MLP:FIM phenomenon.

"An awkward shot of the 'Star Trek' proposal from a slightly different angle also circulated on the Internet, but Wheaton remarked that the unflattering photo did not do the moment justice."

He seems to get a lot of fan hate for playing Wesley Crusher, but he's a actually a pretty cool guy--this reminds me that I need to go check out his blog more often.

From wilwheaton.net:

It was Sunday at Austin Wizard World Con. I had the flu, and almost missed this photo session. Though I had a fever and no cowbell, I sat there and smiled for everyone as best as I could, grateful that I’d spent the entire night throwing up so there was nothing left in me to vomit all over the fans like I was cosplaying from The Exorcist.

...

I’m not sure why this picture is being circulated online, like Patrick is giving the literal Picard Facepalm, because that’s just not what happened. We were all delighted for this young couple, and I know that I was honoured to be part of this moment in their lives. I think it’s likely that Patrick was just wiping sweat off his brow or something like that.

It wasn’t awkward, other than that moment when everyone except the guy had no idea what was going on. Once we knew what was happening, it was awesome. I’m incredibly happy for these people, and I love that I got to be part of what is hopefully a moment they’ll celebrate and remember for the rest of their lives.

I noticed by the time the show was canceled and they were making TNG movies, Marina started looking far younger than she did on the TV series.

That was about 15 years ago. At the time, I started checking TNG reruns and saw that the later the season, the younger she looked.

SHE'S 57 YEARS OLD NOW and she looks younger than ever.
